"Frozen" is the second animated film with a global box office exceeding one billion U.S. dollars after "Toy Story 3". It has a huge impact. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is the most successful work of Disney's animation studio. As a sequel, "Frozen 2" is naturally awaited. But after reading it, the impression is really impressive. This is not to say that the pictures are ordinary, the special effects are not good, and the technology is mediocre. Such key projects will inevitably be built by the industry's top forces, and they are at least visually pleasing. The problem lies in the script, and the story is not well told.
Although Pixar has been recruited by Disney, it is still relatively independent from Disney's animation studio. It’s weird to say that although in recent years have produced such masterpieces as "Invincible Destruction King", "Frozen" and "Crazy Animal City", there has been almost no high-quality animated sequel from beginning to end. This is in sharp contrast to Pixar's "Toy Story" series.
The story of "Frozen 2" is fully established. The previous work overturned Andersen's fairy tales, telling a story about finding confidence inside and building trust outside. On this basis, the sequel tries to explore its background and reasons more deeply. Once successful, the grand world view of the ice and snow world will form its own system. It is a pity that the expression of the whole film is too simple and easy to use, and it also weakens the emotional power.
The story drive of the film can be regarded as a kind of breakthrough, but it lacks suspense and a sense of progressive crisis. This is almost fatal for the expression of the story. Think of "Toy Story 4" released in the same year. After the perfect "Toy Story 3", I didn't dare to look forward to it too much. It is also a simple plot, but also a continuation of the classic, "Frozen 2" lacks too much atmosphere to create. Others always try to win the first level before they have a reason and clues, and then overcome all obstacles, all the way to the end, the final ending is more exciting. But "Frozen 2" didn't feel that way at all. The success of the game was not made by the protagonist, but more like a gift from the director.
Queen Aisha possesses magic power, and behind her, there is also a pair of invisible director's hands, which also possesses magic power. Because as long as Aisha wants something, the director will give it. Surrender in the wind and extinguish in the fire. There is no need to rely on wisdom to find a solution. Once the magic comes out, it is doomed to end. The plot is not driven by the plot itself, it is all arranged by the script and the director. The behind-the-scenes intentions are too obvious, making it tasteless.
The original soundtrack of the film is ahead of the film. Judging from the response, it is destined to no longer have the popularity of the previous film. The combination of song and plot is also really disappointing. Just like at the wine table, people are still talking, and before they have been drinking for three rounds, some people have already eaten and drank, yelled, and sang like a banquet. This is the side effect of forced orgasms in most episodes of "Frozen 2". Even if the magnificent atmosphere and the reverberations surround the beam, it is still unavoidable to be untimely.
Fortunately, with Disney's current status, strong publicity capabilities and brand appeal, it is self-evident, coupled with the popularity of the previous work, "Frozen 2" is bound to achieve commercial success. It's just that I have lost such a story that should have an epic temperament. Disney animation has transformed from 2D hand-painted to computer CG, but in just ten years, it has already possessed extraordinary skills. Arendale's moving blue sea and blue sky, beautiful mountains and rivers, are all painted bright and fresh by the hand of technology. However, the gorgeous coat cannot conceal the paleness of the inner core, nor can it make a new epic.
"Toy Story 4" is a masterpiece, an unforgettable fairy tale, but it is not destined to be an epic. "Frozen 2" could have been. Because it crosses the world, races, and times, it has family and country feelings, but also emotional concerns; there are life and death, and there are trivial parents. It has the innate conditions to become an epic, but it lacks too much acquired effort. Are epics and fairy tales bound to not coexist? Not necessarily. "Frozen 2" wasted an opportunity to prove.
Of course, the film also used a line to shout Disney's slogan-"I just like a happy ending." In fact, it is good to have Disney. At least apart from the cruelty and helplessness of the adult world, we can enter a fairy tale and enjoy two hours of innocence and beauty. However, I hope that next time, next time, the natural enemies of homogenization and assembly line production of these stories can be repelled. After all, a true epic not only depicts the alternation of wind, fire, water, soil, and the four seasons, but also needs to answer why the fallen leaves in the wind raise their heads and sing.
