Immortal purity

In my personal opinion, the virgin in the title does not point to a physical virgin, but a pure state. As the Meximilian heckerIn the pointing. This kind of death is not the setbacks mentioned by the TV reporter in the movie, but the eternal maintenance of this state of purity.

At the beginning of the film, the death of the youngest daughter Cecilia was ushered in. There was no clear cause of death. After an attempted suicide, her parents prepared a party for him. She felt bored, disappointed, and even disgusted, so she turned back to the house and chose to commit suicide. This is the first time that the subject of suicide has been pointed out, and it has also worsened the mother's protective sentiment towards her daughter.

I thought that the suicide of the next four girls would be inextricably linked to Cecilia's suicide, and the whole film would continue to be dull or even gloomy. Then there is very little mention of Cecilia later, only in the section about protecting the tree that it was Cecilia's favorite tree during his lifetime. This is still a sense of protection. For the impact of Cecilia's death, Sofia did not focus on the description, and the film entered a bright atmosphere. The four sisters participate in the dance, Lux and Trip fall in love, and the air is filled with the smell of happiness and the beauty of youth. As Lux failed to return home on time, this temporary pleasure was replaced by the haze. Four girls were kept at home and finally chose to commit suicide.

The film views the incident from the perspective of four boys of the same age. The four boys have no close contact with them, and the limitations of their age and gender also make them unable to understand the suicides of the girls. This also shows that the director did not intend to delve into the cause of suicide. In the eyes of ordinary people, the five girls are like stunners with parents who love them. Even if their mothers are overprotective, they will not commit suicide. However, they all chose to commit suicide. The mother's authoritarian behavior should not be the root cause. Just like those boys, we cannot understand the thoughts of those girls. No matter what insight and experience a person has, he cannot fully understand another person. I think of the 19-year-old boy mentioned in Duras' "Lover" who jumped into the sea and committed suicide after playing cards, without mentioning the reason. "I'm a teenager ,i got problem"."you have never been a 13 years girl."Youth is always sensitive and brave.

Or maybe the director didn't focus on exploring the cause of death because she didn't take death so seriously. In such a world, is death a kind of detachment? None of the five girls in the film hesitated or struggled before they died. Maybe there have been, but the film does not mention it. This means that the director did not regard death as an extremely difficult decision, not a complete end, as we did. After Cecilia died, she still appeared at home, on the tree. Death is a form of expression. Five such beautiful girls have beautiful fantasy in their heads. What can keep this beauty and purity? Only death. As the doctor said, they may not think this is suicide, but flying.

After the death of the five girls, the boys said that they left behind the broken reality and the shameful heart of human selfishness. Does selfishness here refer to girls or parents? Combined with the background, it should be related to the baby boom at that time. But "human beings" are used in the lines, so selfishness belongs to everyone and needs salvation.

Personally, I particularly like the scene where the boy saw Cecilia lying on a tree in the car after Cecilia died, looking up elsewhere.

The Virgin Suicides quotes

  • Narrator: [Narration] In the end we had pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together, gaps remained. Oddly shaped emptiness mapped by what surrounded them, like countries we couldn't name. What lingered after them was not life, but the most trivial list of mundane facts. A clock ticking on the wall, a room dim at noon, the *outrageousness* of a human being thinking only of herself.

  • Narrator: We felt the imprisonment of being a girl.
