The reason I took the time to find this movie was that some articles said the Motion Picture Association of America had named it the 10 best Westerns in America, and this one was number one. I've seen a lot of great Westerns, but the only Westerns I've ever seen are "Unforgiven", which are mostly old movies from the 50s and 60s. It feels too ignorant to think about it, so in order to appreciate the number one western movie in the United States, I specially found it.

After watching the movie, the overall feeling is not good. According to the current film standards, about 5 or 6 points of the film. The plot and dialogue are very long-winded and appetizing, the characters are a bit facialized, and there is no deep and complicated characterization. The performance has a strong 1950s movie style, and it is a bit blunt, and the battle scenes are not tense. The protagonist was in a shootout with the Indians by the river. Ethan didn't hide himself at all, and he really felt a little coping. During the search, Ethan and Martin experienced a bit of a sudden snowfall. In the hot weather just now, heavy snow fell suddenly, which was a bit abrupt, and the arduous search process was not well explored. The story is nothing special, there is not much suspense, the plot is loose, just to see the ending, I have to stick to it.

Some critics said that the genius of this film lies in the way of suggestion, such as the subtle relationship between ethan and Martha, and the small details such as hugs, eye contact, and movements are well handled, but these The details don't feel too important and don't play a big role in the whole movie. Even if I see these doorways, I don't think the movie is great. But these features may have been a big breakthrough in the 1950s. So by the standards of the time, the evaluation of this film may be very high. Anyway, if this movie is put into the present, it is not worth the hard work to find it. Many westerns shot since the 1990s far surpass this one. The only commendable is the Grand Canyon scenery in the western United States.

If you have too many expectations, you will be easily disappointed.

8.8 is indeed a masterpiece of Western films. The color and composition are very beautiful. It is a continuation and self-reflection of the traditional western hero. While feeling the dashing and heroic appearance of John Wayne, he is disgusted by his bastard attributes. The appearance of the Northern Army is very clever. Martin, who is both Indian and white, sublimated thinking about racism. The silent departure at the end also seems to symbolize the end of the era.

The significance of this film lies in the destruction of the traditional narrative structure. Without it, there would be no more classic movies and characters. In addition, every frame of photography is flawless, especially those indoor scenes with lots of characters. The control of blocking is already superb, and it is exciting to watch it. However, the entertaining tendency of this film made him destined not to be a 100% great work. What a pity!

The Searchers quotes

  • Lars Jorgensen: It's this country killed my boy. Yes by golly I tell you, Ethan...

Mrs. Jorgensen: No Lars. It just so happens we be Texicans. Texican is nothing but a human man way out on a limb. This year and next, and maybe for a hundred more. But I don't think it'll be forever. Some day this country's gonna be a fine, good place to be. Maybe it needs our bones in the ground before that time can come.

  • Reverend Clayton: Well, the prodigal brother. When did you get back? Ain't seen you since the surrender. Come to think of it, I didn't see you at the surrender.

Ethan: I don't believe in surrenders. Nope, I've still got my saber, Reverend. Didn't beat it into no plowshare, neither.
