small but fine

Another small but fine film. It's hard to imagine a more incredible project than this one: Chinese director and screenwriter Zhao Ting met Brady Jandreau while filming her first feature film, The Song My Brother Taught Me to Sing. He had fallen from his horse and suffered serious head injuries, and was banned from riding. "The Knight" is a mildly fictional version of the story, starring Jandreau himself (whose last name was changed to Blackburn in the film), his family, and partially paralyzed former Cowboys star Lane Scott (who also plays himself). Few non-professional actors can bridge the gap between reality and imitation so perfectly, and director Zhao Ting has done it.

Even without the filter of the Chinese Girl Guide, it is a very good film. A gambling father, a mentally handicapped sister, a cowboy who was injured in a game, a typical low-level family in the American West, not only unwilling to fate, but also compromised and calm.

The Rider quotes

  • Brady Blackburn: If any animal around here got hurt like I did, they'd have to be put down

  • Brady Blackburn: You know, Lilly, I believe God gives each of us a purpose.

    Lilly Blackburn: Very true.

Brady Blackburn: To the horse, it's to run across the prairie. For a cowboy, it's to ride.
