Balloons focuses on two families trying to escape East Germany: the Wetzels and Strelzyks. As the border between East and West Germany was closely guarded by patrolmen, the border guards were ordered to shoot stowaways, and the situation was very serious. Therefore, the two decided: instead of crossing the border from the ground, it is better to fly over the border from the head of the border guards in a hot air balloon. The two then planned to make their own hot air balloons.
Can they build a hot air balloon strong enough to transport both families there? They have two couples and four children.
In addition to secretly testing their home-made burners, the pair traveled far and wide to find sturdy fabrics to make their hot air balloons, an elaborate process that took nearly two years.
Finally, the critical moment came when the two families boarded a homemade hot air balloon. They managed to get high, but unfortunately encountered some low-level clouds, the moisture in the clouds pressed down on the balloon and even extinguished the burner, causing the balloon to plummet down and crash into East Germany, not far from the border. The two families brushed past death.
