Movies are a Pandora's Box

The original Pandora's Box mythology is weird. After Pandora finally opened the box and unleashed a series of evil things like jealousy, poverty, hard labor, death, etc., why keep the only good thing, hope, in the box? What does it mean?

Before evil things are released, they cannot harm human beings. Similarly, there is no way to affect human beings before the beautiful "hope" is released. So at the end of this myth, mankind must be hopeless. But this is different from our daily experience. Although there are many depressed patients in this world, most people still have hope in life.

My personal understanding is that "hope" in this context is actually a bad thing, and keeping hope in it is a kindness of Zeus to mankind. It is bad in two places. First, the suffering will not go away, and the greater the hope, the heavier the suffering. The routine of birth, aging, sickness and death, the seven deadly sins of human nature, hard work, and uncertainty about the meaning of life, these negative things are bound to exist. More things that you can change.

Second, what needs to be given up is the "hope" for Pandora himself. Pandora is a box in itself. She is beautiful, seductive, innocent, dangerous, irrational, and destructive. She is a collection of male negative images of women, a "women's" box. So the point of the story is don't have hope for "women", embrace the safe things of reason and faith, and the woman will let her fend for itself. This explanation is a bit far-fetched, but I think it also fits with the ancient Greeks' view of women.

But stupid humans still need movies like this... people need to see the goddess Louise Brooks in the movies, revel in her modern dance moves and helmet-like bobs, and then step out of the movie theater for a breath of fresh air. The charm of the movie is a kind of safety danger, a kind of roller coaster, absolutely safe and dangerous behavior, so that people can get spiritual catharsis. Movies can also be seen as a "box" that puts out a dangerous character like Pandora for us to enjoy, and then puts her in after it's over, just like "Hope".

Evil is a relaxation, a vent, and it can even be a redemption. Humanity needs Pandora.
