South and North

Just like the name of the play, South and North. Classification in real life is inferred from the sense of distance in geographic space. In the context of the Industrial Revolution, the Margaret family, who originally lived in an idyllic landscape, moved from the south to a small town unfamiliar to the north. Different from the leisurely and comfortable life in the old city, everything in the new city is very shocking to her: rude workers, poor working conditions, endless conflicts between workers and factory owners... Of course, all this was not surprising during the Industrial Revolution. However, with the contact with the cold-hearted capitalist Thornton, Margaret is also rediscovering herself. In the play, the performance of the male lead Thornton, in my opinion, is simply impossible to fault, and the real can no longer be real. As a capitalist, the workers are extremely harsh and unsympathetic. But in the face of the person he likes, he immediately changes his body and becomes the image of a pure-hearted man who silently protects the woman he likes behind him. Even after being rejected by the heroine, she still silently protects the heroine. The male protagonist expresses the contradiction to the fullest. Although the emotional line of the hero and heroine is the main line, what I like more is the drama between the heroine and the residents of the small town. If we say that the tortuous emotional line between the male protagonist and the female protagonist is a response to the relationship between the traditional south and the industrial north that is both contradictory and closely related under the industrial revolution. Then the reconciliation process between the heroine and the town residents is the best explanation for the nature of human nature and kindness. In completely different and contradictory growth environments, two completely different styles of characters have been created. Different classes, different cultural acceptance levels, and different life values. But it is this difference between the South and the North that makes their reconciliation even more precious. At the same time, it was the creation of literary works that brought them to a reconciliation. On the other hand, this kind of class reconciliation is difficult to achieve in reality, but isn't the creation of literary works just to make those things that are inherently difficult or impossible to achieve through the form of works? In general, the creators of works can dig out the hidden ideas in human hearts more delicately than ordinary people. Therefore, the creation of a literary work also has its inherent inevitability. And the ending of the play "South and North" also seems to cater to this idealization of literature. While Thornton is mired in bankruptcy, Margaret steps up as heir to a huge fortune. In the end, the male protagonist not only gained love but also solved the problem of the factory. Although the ending looks good. But it does not affect the next, the female protagonist will become the capitalist who exploits the laborers together with the male protagonist, and it will not change the tragic fate of countless exploited workers in the context of the industrial revolution. However, all of this is an inevitable process of history. But there is no need to be pessimistic. Southerners and northerners in Britain are not so prejudiced these days.

This film illustrates a problem, the routine of romance and brain damage is unified in the world. The self-righteous and brain-damaged heroine who can't see the merits, and the blind male hero who has the ability and money to fall in love with the heroine for no apparent reason. It's not bad to easily describe social conflicts. British bs to the police is a historical tradition. Lestrade, you may rest in peace. Sherlock Holmes is not targeting you. . .

The hero is so charming! The actors did a great job too! When he said look back, look back at me, he pokes his heart every time he thinks about it. TT may only have 4 episodes. I feel that the plot is progressing a little faster. I hope to find time to read the original!

North & South quotes

  • Margaret Hale: I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.

  • Nicholas Higgins: My poor Bess! She lived the life of a dog. Hard work and illness. She never had one moment of rejoicing. I'm not saying I don't believe in your God, but I can't believe He meant the world to be as it is. The masters ruling over us, the rest of us left to live a half-life in the shadows.
