In the depths of the ocean: mediocre scripts waste themes and casts

Reading "Moby Dick" (Moby Dick) in middle school, I was deeply shocked by this ocean epic. Later, I saw movies and mini-series that couldn't be compared with the original work. Two years ago, I was looking forward to the director of "Wanted" (Wanted, 2008). When I was remaking this masterpiece again, I heard that Long Howard planned to put the prototype story on the screen, hoping to focus on it immediately, the new version of "Moby Dick" was finally dead. Director Ron Howard has filmed "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), "A Dialogue with Nixon" (Frost/Nixon, 2008), "Rush, 2013", several of his favorite movies, so his The new work is full of expectations. However, the greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment, and unfortunately it has been fulfilled again...

"The Depths of the Sea" is adapted from the long documentary literature of the same name by the American writer Nathaniel Philbrick. Based on the massive data passed down by the shipwreck survivors, it carefully restores the American whaling ship in November 1820. "The Essex" was hit and sunk by a giant sperm whale in the depths of the South Pacific. The shipwreck later inspired the American writer Herman Melville to create "Moby-Dick", but Melville did not describe the ship. What happened after the sinking: The surviving crew drifted in the depths of the ocean on a whaling boat for three months in despair, and survived by eating the corpses of their companions. At the beginning of the filming, the selling point of people cannibalism attracted a lot of attention. The media hyped up the "crew cannibalism". To some extent, this was not shot in "Life of Pi" (Life of Pi, 2012). "Second Story". But the problem is that the movie treats this piece shrunkenly, fearfully, for some reason... In recent years, "Kon Tiki" (Kon Tiki, 2012), "All Is Lost" (2013), " Several films such as Unbroken (2014) have more or less shown drifting on the sea. Whether "Depth of the Sea" can dig deeper and new in this subject matter is what the audience expects. What is disappointing is the film. We didn’t do this. We don’t see Chase, the first mate played by Brother Hammer, shook his gun and guarded the box with very little bread left. We couldn’t see the conflicts that might be caused by hunger and thirst, and we couldn’t see the forced distribution of human flesh. The bloody cruelty, even the desperation of the crew members who had eaten the bread soaked in seawater, was so thirsty and unbearable to wait and die...Some of them were just as if a dragonflies in the water hastily taken the decision to eat corpses, The process of suicide by lottery, as well as the human bones that passed by in a flash... Looking through the data of the year, it is true that there was no cannibalism on the whaling boat, thanks to the strict organizational discipline of the whaling team. The survivors on the boat experienced the difficult choice of food exhaustion and forced to fill their hunger with human flesh. After the corpse was eaten, they used a lottery to fairly decide who committed suicide and became everyone’s food. The “cannibalism” hyped by the media at the time was obviously over. , But from another perspective, as an adapted work, it is understandable to make some appropriate adaptations to emphasize the tension of the drama. The screenwriter did not add any pen and ink to this part suitable for creation, even why there is no life and death struggle. To explain, this is wrong.

The humanity that the film focuses on is greed. In that era when navigation and industry went hand in hand, oil had not yet been drilled on land. Both lamp oil and lubricating oil had to rely on whale oil extracted from whale blubber. The whales in the offshore were gradually being hunted and killed. For more whale oil and more With much profit, the captain, chief mate, and second mate unanimously took a boat to the depths of the ocean with no hesitation...The owner tried to cover up the fact that the "Essex" was hit by a whale in order to keep his business. When the whaling team shouted and pierced the skin of the giant whale with a javelin, the sea surface was scarlet. While humans greedily demanded from nature, they played a tragic song of charcoal. Naturally, they were provoked. "S" launched an impact, and in an instant, the fighting spirit collapsed and fled for the desert. The ship capsized in a blink of an eye, and people realized their insignificance and the majestic power of nature. The screenwriter emphasized the relationship between man and nature, and gave some of the characteristics of Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick" to First Mate Chase. Faced with the giant whales, they always took the lead and pursued them. The whales looked at each other several times, and the outcome was reversed. In the end, either out of fear or exhaustion, the raised javelin slowly dropped, and the whale slowly walked away. It seemed that man and nature had reached some kind of reconciliation, and the final two sides of "Moby-Dick" showed the opposite direction and conformed. The current environmental theme. Emphasis is placed on man and nature. Many characters have become a set-like set of dragons. Kylian Murphy’s second mate Joey has become a dispensable role; the captain’s cousin Coffin’s only role is to save the misfortune of winning the lottery. His cousin killed himself with a gun; Captain Paland and First Mate Chase, one of whom was a captain because of a prominent family background, and the other was outstanding but the first mate, the conflicts and conflicts caused by this also lacked tension at the end of the point. Wei Xiao plays Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, as a listener of the story and guides the audience into the story. There are not many scenes. Previously, it was rumored that the screenwriter boldly played Melville as a witness to the shipwreck. "Spider-Man" Tom Holland, he plays Nixon, the youngest rookie crew member, and does not have much room to play. So far, the film has become another blockbuster that wastes a gorgeous cast since "Desperate Altitude".

It is undeniable that the film is excellent at the audio-visual level, ensuring the viewability. Giant screen 3D is definitely the first choice. Heavy rain, raging waves, and huge waves seem to be paving the surface. The mast breaks, the huge whale tears the bottom of the ship, and the sound of the squally roar is thrilling. The huge whale produced by special effects can be described as the most realistic "Mobile" in history. The reduction of "Essex" is so exact that a mast can't be misplaced, and the reduction of whale blubber to refine whale oil is enough to make the original powder of "Moby Dick" instantly cross the deck of the Picode On... The film was originally scheduled to be released globally in March. Warner was full of confidence and delayed 9 months to aim for the Oscars. However, from the current point of view, in addition to visual effects, sound effects, and photography, other awards are expected to be nominated. Too self-confident too blindly.

Long Howard is still great. This is not a good story, but he handles it that makes people feel moral but not preaching~ The actors are also very good, the bun face and the captain have not been seen for a long time!! btw accidentally bought 4D this time and it feels shaky The wind that has been blowing for two hours has been sprayed with water several times...It is recommended to watch this film in ordinary 2D...(silently go to the original)

How to complete the narrative without the narrator present? The switching of multiple perspectives will inevitably lead to the "fiction" that Melville finally mentioned, which is a "one-size-fits-all" attempt to eliminate the shortcomings of the previous images. Looking back, the film is like a realist work that strives to sail to the shore of fiction, but overthrow it. After reality turns to fiction, how much credibility is left in the image? Maybe the extreme mysticism would be better if it was just to get "the courage to go where one does not want to go" in the end.

In the Heart of the Sea quotes

  • Old Thomas Nickerson: Take the money and leave! The devil's bargain.

Herman Melville: No, sir. The devil loves unspoken secrets. Especially those that fester in a man's soul.

    Old Thomas Nickerson: What's yours?

  • Owen Chase: It's a privilege to know the moment of one's death in advance - be able to prepare for it. Cursed to be so far from home - without a chance to say goodbye, without a chance to make peace; without a chance to settle scores. Then let us at least settle those between us, Captain.

    George Pollard: Captain of what?

Owen Chase: The Essex was lost through no fault of yours. I was as much to blame for...

George Pollard: You are not the captain! But you were born to do this job. I was just born into it.

Owen Chase: What do we do, do you think, George? And what offense did we give God to upset him so?

George Pollard: The only creature to have offended God here is the whale.

Owen Chase: Not us? In our arrogance, our greed. Look were we find ourselves.

George Pollard: We are supreme creatures made in God's own likeness. Earthly kings, whose business it is to circumnavigate the planet bestowed to us. To bend nature to our will.

Owen Chase: You really feel like an earthly king after everything that we've been through? We're nothing. We're... we're specks. And dust.

George Pollard: We sail into the sun at dawn. If we are to die, then with God's grace, let us die as men.
