Why did Fermina Daza reject him?

In the scene where Fermina Daza went to the market with the dark-skinned maid, he caught up with him, and then flatly refused. The film does not have a very clear explanation for the reason. Is it because he has been separated for more than a year, and in order to wait for Fermina Daza, he has stood on the beach with an umbrella all day to withstand the wind and rain, so he has aged rapidly, making Fermina Daza unacceptable. . . . . ?
