Sling Blade - 8/10

This film is Billy Bob Thornton's self-directed and self-directed debut, and it was a blockbuster at the Oscars that year. The handling of colors and shots in the whole film is quite wonderful, and the script is even more impeccable. It can be seen that the story of this film benefits from the director's years of personal precipitation and accumulation. Billy's Karl is impressive. If everyone has a character in their hearts that they most want to shape and express, then Karl is a part of Billy's inner world, and it belongs to him alone. This weird and taciturn "freak" actually has an angelic heart. Every time he says something that pleases him, the very kind-hearted self in the inner world will use Mm-hmm to express some kind of affirmation, at least this is my understanding. The note he left to the little boy at the end is even more moving. This is an independent film that needs to be watched quietly, a film with a real story and content.

Archives 2013.3.15.7pm 148-minute version. Very standard play structure, the three scenes of breaking into the bedroom at night (hammer shadow), baptism, and murder are quite coherent (although it may not be compact enough now, it is too easy to see through). The reason why the ending point responds to the beginning is to follow the main tone, but it can actually be more concise. The protagonist's lines should not be too many. It is clever to add lines on the grounds that the child likes his voice.

Sling Blade quotes

  • Doyle: Linda, go get my guitar. It's out there with that looney toon.

  • Karl: I don't reckon you have to go with women to be a good daddy to a boy. You been real square-dealin' with me. The Bible says two men ought not lay together. But I don't reckon the Good Lord would send anybody like you to Hades. That Frank, he lives inside of his own heart. That's an awful big place to live in. You take good care of that boy.

    [walks off]

    Vaughan Cunningham: I will. Karl?
