What stands out is that weird tone

The first half of the film is good, especially the beginning is very catchy. The detailed description of the burial work reminds me of the beginning of the Japanese movie "The Burial Master", which is very comical.

But this comedic effect seems to slowly disappear as the film continues, but it does not turn into a touching spiritual cleansing like "The Undertaker". Of course, these are two films with different themes and should not be compared in this way. But as far as the film "Bernie" is concerned, it stops at a place that is neither sad nor happy from the middle, and then just spits out the story little by little.

If this is a character film, then the description around this character seems to stop in the middle. The rest of the story is just about how the prosecutors and the townspeople reacted to the crime, whether or not they're talking about Bernie. From the film's point of view, the character narrative about Bernie is over.

If it's a drama, then this approach to storytelling is peculiar. Not that it's bad, just weird, and it's no wonder that some people use the word quirky (adj. treacherous, bizarre) to describe this film. If the director moved the crime from the middle of the film to the end and played it in flashbacks when Bernie confessed, it would be a serious crime drama.

So in conclusion, this is really a weird movie that jumps out of the box in our impression of genre films.

(The key plots are revealed below.)

Do some people think that this film is a bit of an analysis of human nature, and even tried to discuss a little about the American judicial system? But I think looking at the film from these two perspectives, I can only draw a four-character conclusion - just taste it. There are also comments on IMDB that the film does not seem to dig deep.

The clearest takeaway I personally took from this story was to learn to say no. Kindness cannot be without a bottom line. The oppression a person suffers will only reflect on himself, and those who oppress others will never reflect on themselves. Look at the way Marjorie jumped at her age and said, "I knew you hated me, you want to leave me and be with everyone", she wouldn't reflect, she felt that the whole world was sorry for her.

I think when she closed the door with her mouth crooked and blocked Bernie who was leaving, Jack Black's performance was particularly good, and it really made people feel his helplessness and exhaustion. Therefore, cups often have such a turning point, and Bernie's turning point is here. If he was determined to go, he abandoned the car and climbed out of the broken door.

Bernie isn't a saint, he's a mortal and he has things he can't stand (Marjorie's chomping action). A mortal person cannot achieve the ultimate good, because there is no worst in this world, only worse, so there is a saying that "sages don't die, but thieves never stop".

Of course, these are all my personal far-fetched ideas. The movie does not tell you these words directly, except for a comment from the funeral home manager: "Goodness and evil are originally incompatible, and you know what will happen one day. , this combination will break. It's probably because she is more evil than he is kind, and he explodes." When it comes

to the lineup, I suddenly realized that Shirley MacLean, who played Marjorie, turned out to be a classic in the 1950s. The heroine in the black and white film "Peachy Apartment"! It's a treasure that never gets old! You can see that her thin eyelids, tangled thin lips, and that nervousness that is a bit annoying, haven't changed.

Jack Black plays very lively, although I think his eyebrows and eyes are evil, but after watching the whole film, I really think he is the kind and cowardly Bernie. Matthew McConaughey is well-versed in acting as a Southern lawyer and won't comment. As for the director, Linklater, he is the source of the weirdness of the whole film, and I personally think that he is still a bit talkative.

The tone of the movie is weird, Bernie is wrong, but he should never suffer such a heavy sin

Bernie quotes

  • Scrappy Holmes: Well, trials are generally moved when the judge determines that the defendant can't get a fair trial locally. And that's usually because the crime is so egregious and so well-known that everybody in the community has already convicted the poor soon of a bitch accused of it. But in all the years I've been doing this for a living, I have never heard of the State seeking a change of venue because the defendant was so well-liked that they couldn't get a conviction.

  • Townsperson: I wrote the warden a letter. Yeah, I did. I told him that he had to give you a work release or something like that, so that you could sing at my funeral. Now, I'm not sick or anything, but now Bernie, you promised me that you would do that. And I totally mean wear those lil' chains or whatever if it made them feel better, so...

Bernie Tiede: That is awful sweet, Lenora. And it would be an honor, but don't count on it. I don't think they're letting me out of here for nothing.

Townsperson: Oh pfft... sure they will. I told him that you went temporarily insane. And we're all going insane sooner or later.
