When AIDS was raging, what would have happened if no one stood up and shouted?
Perhaps most people who think they are normal will think that this is a punishment brought by God: it is to bring disaster to those different people! who made them so different from us.
No, it didn't turn out that way, because that view still holds true today.
If no one comes forward, the authorities may slowly study related drugs in a few years, and then a few years of clinical trials, and a few more years, and so on. What does it matter that so many young people just die waiting? Anyway, compared to most normal citizens, the dead people are obviously not in the same camp.
So, a roaring voice is needed: yes, maybe I will never be able to change your mind, but I must defend the rights that belong to me—the rights of a citizen, the rights of a living being.
If I don't fight for and defend my rights, I will only be trampled on by others.

After watching "How to survive a plague" again, Ned's prototype, Larry Kramer, was much more popular, watching him roar angrily: "Plauge! We are in the middle of a fucking plague!" Ps: Mark Ruffalo and Larry Kramer were pretty similar when they were young.

The Normal Heart quotes

  • Ned Weeks: [to the President's advisor] What exactly does your title mean in terms of our plague?

John Bruno: We prefer not to use negative terms. It only scares people.

Ned Weeks: Well, there's 3,339 cases so far and 1,122 dead. Sounds like a plague to me. I'm scared, aren't you?

  • John Bruno: Do you really believe that anybody in a serious public office position in their heart of hearts or even in their most closeted meetings say to each other, "Hey guys, let's not get too upset about this?"

Ned Weeks: [to the President's advisor] Yes, your boss hasn't said the word AIDS out loud.
