the spirits within

I was pleasantly surprised after watching the movie. First, I was amazed at the CG technology that existed back then, and second, I thought deeply about some of the connotations of the movie.
Although this work seems a bit old-fashioned in terms of the plot framework and character settings (it was impossible to know whether it was old-fashioned at the time), but carefully think about the film's theory of "Gaia" and the theory of the fate of life , but it is really intriguing.

"Gaia" is the soul of the earth, and the end of all life's life cycle - death is not the end, but leaves return to their roots. Such a concept has a strong oriental color, or Japanese spirit. The Japanese advocate nature and believe that everything has a soul and spirituality. Director Hironobu Sakaguchi integrated the Japanese spirit into such a film aimed at the European and American markets, which may be one of the factors that many Europeans and Americans cannot understand and fail at the box office. But as an oriental person who can understand this kind of thinking, I think this explanation is very good. Maybe when I have a child, when he asks me what death is, I will say that death is the process of our soul returning to "Gaia", the soul of the whole earth, the whole world - "Gaia" is actually countless lives The gathering of souls. So we have to cherish this land, because it is the cohesion of our ancestors' lives and the place where we return after we die.

Another noteworthy point is that the film has an unusually soft interpretation of the terrifying alien "ghost." It has been emphasized many times that they are not invaders, but alien souls who have lost their homes and fallen to the earth. It is no wonder that Europeans and Americans cannot understand this kind of oriental thinking of "harmony" and "acceptance" towards the ghosts who have almost wiped out human beings. But I admire this kind of thinking from the bottom of my heart, how rare and great is the objective view, tolerance and tolerance of everything. This kind of mind and mentality is also very applicable in reality.

Last but not least, the ending song. Of course, this is a personal preference haha, maybe some people don't like this style.

In short, although it is not a top-notch work, in my opinion, this film is good and worth watching.

A milestone in the history of animation. I remember watching it for the first time in 2001 before I decided it wasn't a live-action movie. Of course, it seems a little incredible from the perspective of 18 years later, but at that time, I really never saw such an amazing animation. Classics are linked to the times. Just like looking at the generation of "The Legend of Sword and Fairy" with the current eyes, it is almost unattractive, but it is an eternal classic. The film is the same. Give five stars.

The milestone production does not waste space. The world view is still astonishing and terrifying in the traditional Japanese style—desperation carries hope; the ending is the heroic view of Hollywood in the United States—in order to save the world, I beg you to take me in. The fate of mankind depends on the annihilation of our team in exchange for something. Can't keep up with this script...
