Knife in the Water: Tragic Comedy Fallacy

Life is inseparable from errors, and perhaps the most essential essence of life lies in the tragicomic errors themselves.

Men, women, boys, their hooks and gallops on the lake all have the meaning of disputes. Compared with the middle-class couple, the boy is weak at first, but there is a bit of frivolity and fearlessness in the fear. He came to their boat and started the entanglement of peach color and the rush of heterogeneous class elements. The life of a middle-class couple is boring and superficial. The man does not welcome this rude visitor, but shows himself as an authoritative captain several times. The woman is equivalent to the boy's lover or even the mother, and their hearts are soaked. Much suspicion and distrust. The scale of human consideration has come. The next day, the man jokingly threw the boy's knife into the water, causing the boy's anger, and the boy fell into the water during the dispute. The woman is anxious to find the boy's trace, but the man actually wants to throw the boy's belongings into the water to make a human evaporation. While the man goes into the water to find the boy, the boy swims onto the boat. The woman slapped the boy because he had tricked them into saying he couldn't swim. The woman said that boys and men are essentially the same, and they have a physical relationship with boys, because she actually likes the boldness and shyness of boys. The boy finally went ashore and left. The man listened to the woman's statement and thought it was her intentional excuse, so he drove to the police station and surrendered himself.

The behavior of the man and his scolding of his wife is a manifestation of the hypocrisy and corruption of the middle class. In the game with the boy several times, he hoped that he would occupy the absolute dominance, and the feeling of being in control was quickly destroyed by the boy. As the initiator of the patriarchy, he took over the quality of life - leading to his intrusive feeling towards the boy. Too bad, because the boy used to peep at the woman while she was changing. A man may have been such a powerless boy once, and the boy's tomorrow may be this hypocritical man of the corrupt bourgeoisie.

The man finally decided to surrender to the police station because he couldn't believe or said he didn't want to believe his wife's confession that he had cheated. It hurts a man's self-esteem. Romantic blood and loneliness and cruelty interpenetrate each other. The relationship between husband and wife in the middle class is often easy to break like a soap bubble. Life is always wrong, and Roman Polanski renders a tragicomedy world that is both true and illusory based on the interconnectedness and echoes of little things.

A woman's position is ambiguous and complicated. When her husband oppresses the boy like a father, she maintains the boy under her wing, and when the boy provokes them, she takes the same external position with the man. When the boy was exiled into the water, she was a staunch defender of the boy, and when the boy came ashore, she reprimanded them for being the same, showing a different moral appeal from "you". And when the boy finally kisses her, she removes the layers of disguise as a moral little woman, revealing her inner desire for passion and transcendence.

Roman Polanski's powerful grip is evident throughout the story, which is his debut, and one that's hard to come by in subsequent films.

    1. The relationship between the three people is too delicate. 2. The composition and scheduling of the shots on the boat are very meaningful. 3. It starts in the car and ends with the vehicle in the distant view, corresponding to the front and rear. 4. That knife is power? Danger? Possessive? or genital symbol?

The subtitles don't match up a bit. The version below has French subtitles, which is very annoying. I will find a cleaner version next time. The main line is: college students, hitchhiking, riding yachts, fighting husbands, engaging wives... The first few scenes are excessive, such as the husband changing clothes, and the action of a pullover will naturally change the perspective, which is very design... The middle-aged man looks a bit like Cage when he wears glasses, and the woman is a bit like a grandson...

Knife in the Water quotes

  • Krystyna: [Speaking to the young man, comparing him with her husband] You're just like him... only half his age, and twice as dumb.

  • Andrzej: When I was an apprentice helmsman, we had a bosun - Krystyna, what was his name? The guy with the willow. He'd say: see that willow? It was an oak. If the bosun says it's a willow, it's a willow. "To the willow, quick march!"

Young Boy: Shit. Excuse me. So much water in there.

Andrzej: We'd sit on that willow maybe an hour at a time.

    Young Boy: On that oak.

Andrzej: Willow, for us. And he made us go "cuckoo".

Young Boy: Made you do what?

Andrzej: Make a cuckoo sound. Like the bird.

    Young Boy: And you cuckooed.

Andrzej: He wasn't all that smart but he turned us into men.
