About sex and healing

"Intimacy Therapy" takes sex and love in the disabled as its theme, and it is frank and lovely.

In the film, Mark, who is in his thirties, is a successful poet and journalist, but because he has changed to polio, and the sequelae is that the parts of the body that can move are almost above the neck, breathing must rely on "iron lungs" conduct. Aside from his physical shortcomings, he had never had a sexual experience that made him feel incomplete and incomplete.

Mark needs the care of a carer. The first new recruit was a young college student with a boyfriend.

She gave Mark the desire for love and curiosity about sex. At the beginning of the story, the other party seems to like him too. Perhaps the principle of reciprocity in interpersonal relationships plays a role, and people tend to like those who like them. However, Mark's failed confession in the clothing store shows the difference in the understanding of the progress of a relationship between the two parties.

The second Chinese-American carer was understanding and a little cunning. Played a fueling role in Mark's treatment. In order to solve his own sexual and love problems, Mark accidentally contacted the sex therapist Sharo.

Sex therapists are fundamentally different from prostitutes who trade sex for money, and their work is ultimately a form of social work. Although you have to pay. Sharuo's husband not only knows about her work, but even discusses her work situation with her before going to bed. This is in contrast to the jealous boyfriend of the female college student who started out as Mark's nurse, and the professionalism of the sex worker is partly reflected.

Sharuo solved Mark's confusion and fear of sex through several sex therapy sessions, and taught him how to get along with his own sexual desire and how to get along well with himself.

For the first time, she complimented Mark's body, stroking every part of him, starting with his hair. Being mutilated doesn't mean ugly, and Mark believes so with his natural sense of humor. For the second session, Rosa led Mark to try to have sex for the first time. And so on, each treatment has a different theme. And every time after the end, Sharuo will record the treatment.

"It's a body God created for you, and there's nothing to be ashamed of."

Sometimes we can't tell the difference between sex and love, especially at an age when we haven't yet experienced both. On the other hand, the two are not entirely different. In the mix of sex and love, Mark wrote such touching love poems to Sharu, who was empathetic to it. It is precisely because of this that even Sharu couldn't fall asleep for a long time. Transference and countertransference are problems that social workers and psychological counselors often need to face.

The climax of the film is between 65 and 78 minutes. , Mark had a chance encounter with the female college student who had taken care of him at the beginning. After a moment of joy, it was his farewell to the United States. Immediately after that, Mark's treatment also came to an end.

In the movie, Sharuo, who was naked, held up the full-length mirror that he brought, so that Mark could see his body that he had not seen for many years because of the sequelae.

"Mark, this is your body."

Love can make each other perfect. After the treatment, Sha Ruo left with a mirror in her arms. Mark's Asian female nurse caught up and handed back to her the poem that Mark had written to her that she had left in the room. She sat in the car, and Sha Ruo wanted to cry. . Is it possible to have intimacy at work for the purpose of healing? Sharuo's husband still chooses to understand after his rage, and the empathy will be handled by Sharuo with professionalism. So even though both of them are still wearing some lingerie, they are willing to let the treatment stop at a suitable place and never see each other again. The treatment ended after this fourth treatment.

It turns out that sex can also be used to heal the mind.

And Mark, who finally tasted sex, also knew that it was just the beginning, but at least he was no longer a "child" from now on. He could let go of his hidden feelings of inferiority and be more able to love. He did meet someone he fell in love with, although only one stroke was left.

The camera flashed, and at Mark's funeral more than ten years later, all the people he loved in the past came. The priest read the poem Mark wrote to Sharu on the podium. Sharu and his husband also came. Everyone sat down, tearful and smiling.

Is such an occupation reasonable in the US? Is this kind of sex and affection justified? How do sex and religion merge?

Bill Hillman - Reporter: Mark O'Brien has been going to UC Berkley since 1978. That's O'Brien in the motorized gurney heading for class last week. He had polio when he was six years old. The disease left his body crippled, but his mind remained sharp and alert. And since he wanted to be a writer, Mark O'Brien entered Cal to major in English and learn his trade. He wrote this poem for us about school here and about graduation.

Mark O'Brien: Graduation. Today I hear the crowd's applause. Receive the congratulations from my friends. Today I ask if I've found a place among the rest, who studied, read, wrote, and passed the test in cap and gown. Today I hope you see a man upon this stage.
