The disillusionment of idealism

First of all, at the beginning of the film, it was mentioned that a German man was engaged in a revolution in Chile, and he was so popular, so he was targeted by the Chilean government. As a result, he was not low-key when he escaped. He had to take a few photos for recording. Then the male lead After being arrested, his wife (that is, the hostess) began to save her husband.

This passage is very real and fully embodies the values of Westerners, which is the spirit of international revolution mentioned in the film. This is very different from the Chinese, who like to help others by giving things and doing work, but if the other party has family conflicts, he would avoid it. Westerners are different. They cannot tolerate an unfortunate life, believe in their own strength, and regard this kind of help as their responsibility and obligation, so there is a series of what we call interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Whether this approach is correct or not, at least some people in Western countries do it out of goodwill.

But for the government, whether you are in good faith or not, as long as you encourage the people to oppose the government, the government will take measures. The hostess found her husband’s companions, embassy, and Amnesty International, but they were also helpless. The hostess had to go alone to find her husband. So the German couple went to the prison called the Colony of Dignity. So the protagonists are lucky, the bad guys can't hurt them, but the people around the protagonist are all mutilated. In this part, the protagonist, like a guide, takes us to scenes of tragedies in the prison: the family is broken up, people monitor each other for suspicion, wisdom is regarded as the source of chaos and disaster, a loyalty that has not been seen for three years. Love was shattered in the name of religion... One of the things that impressed me most was that after the old lady manager let go of the "prisoner" due to a mistake, she was fisted by Schaefer (the ruler of the colony of dignity) without complaining. The sorrow of people in the colony of dignity is not the restriction of freedom or the disregard of human rights, but the lack of a human soul who is imprisoned without knowing it, and prides itself on hurting others. In such a "society", Schäfer realized his Nazi dream-absolute control over people.

However, the protagonist has to escape after all. During this period, the unexpected obstruction of the German Embassy once again told us that the individual is insignificant in the face of politics. When the German couple took photos and boarded the journey home, I almost happily waited for the protagonist to return to Germany, expose this dark place, and bring down the colony of dignity, but the movie came to an abrupt end. Indeed, personal ideals and strengths are after all insignificant, and it is impossible to shake a powerful interest group. The protagonist can escape from the dead because it is God’s favor. Although Schaefer was sentenced in the end and Chile received international condemnation, it was in 2005, and it was far from 1973. It can be said that the ideal of the male protagonist has not been realized.

Idealism has always been the object of criticism, and the insignificance and fragility of idealists can be seen in this film. But I still admire them from the bottom of my heart. Without their unrequited efforts, the world might be different.
