Bill the Butcher called Priest a respectable enemy, the only enemy he remembered in his mind: because they have a common belief-for their own tribe. Priest Vallon strives for a corner of survival in this land for their tribe. And Bill wants to maintain the original appearance here, and he doesn't want it to change a bit, especially when it is invaded by foreign cultures.
Bill hates the "invasion" of foreigners and painstakingly put aside the foreign influence of new immigrants. Mr Cutting recalled that his fathers worked hard to cultivate this piece of land to gain a place, and for those who became American citizens with only a ferry ticket, New immigrants who "have nothing to do" hate them.
After the riot, Politician Mr Tweet looked at the buried New Yorkers and said: "we are burying a lot of votes down here tonight."
"friends or foe, it makie no difference now"
"New yorker we all was born of blood and tribulation. And so then too, our great city."
all in all, they are a group of people who love this land.
The whole movie is magnificent and thrilling. Especially at the end, from the shore of HARMET, the tombstone of New Yorker quietly watched New York uptown sit uplifted by a tall building. This scene made me particularly touched: people who may have sacrificed for this city will end up in the long river of history. They disappeared, and no one will remember them in the end. However, this city will always remember them. Those streets will still reverberate with their footsteps, forever.
