No city is not Gomora

On a winter and snowy afternoon, I slowly finished watching "Gomorra" ("Gomorra"), and my mood was uncertain. Turning his head to outside the window, the vast sky, the howling north wind is mixed with cold snow, in the west, there is a ray of golden light firmly coming out from behind the clouds, eye-catching.

Watching "Gamola" is easy to think of "City of God" and "Elite Force", but the latter two are about Rio de Janeiro, while the first one is about Naples, a southern Italian city thousands of miles away. Although the two sides of the land have no difference in nature, they are both sinful cities full of darkness and violence, death and blood. The three films all use documentary-style shooting techniques. However, compared to the gorgeous circular narratives and gripping conflicts of the two Brazilian films, the five main-line narratives of "Gamola", in its plain narration, show even more cruel reality and intense darkness.

The five main lines are divided into four dark figures and two bright figures. Regardless of their status and age, in Naples, they cannot avoid having a relationship with the Mafia Comorra.

The 13-year-old boy, Toto, has the same name as the boy in "Paradise Cinema", but his fate is completely different. In the slums where the gangs gather, the drug trade is carried out right in front of your eyes. From time to time, there are exchanges of fire between police and bandits and gang clashes, and bullets fly wildly. In such an environment, a boy like him has only two choices, to join the gang or join the gang. Toto joined Camora. His life has not changed. He still delivers food for his mother, and stops by the young mother named Maria to play with the monkey Sylvana. Only occasionally, he would also load a pack of drugs and carefully go out for delivery.

The gang clashes, his accomplices are killed, everyone discusses revenge but no one can be found, incompetently and shamelessly sends the fire to the innocent Maria who has only a trace of contact with the opponent. The accomplice asked Toto to trick Maria out, and Toto said nothing more. The accomplice said that you can only do it with us, and we only need to think about it. Toto went, wearing that England No. 7 jersey, tricked Maria out. He turned and left, gunshots sounded behind him; his face flushed, he just walked forward quickly; he knew that one day his ending would be the same as Maria, but he had no choice.

Marco and Shiro are another main line, different from Toto, the two of them actively choose to take the road of gangsters. Two arrogant and ignorant young men thought that with guns, they would have a noble status and a lot of money. They rob the gang's drugs and arms, seek pleasure, and make a living. However, the offended Mafia was just a small trap, and the two of them were caught. They were eventually shot to death and their bodies were thrown into the sea.

When the two of them were in the nightclub, the music when the strippers danced was great! Be regarded as the only bright spot of this main line.

Roberto's story is my favorite thread. This diligent, kind-hearted and upright young man may be the only light set by the director to allow the audience to breathe in the infinitely surging darkness. Roberto worked for Frank, a businessman. Frank is a businessman who specializes in disposing of toxic waste industrial waste for his clients, but his approach is simply to transfer the waste from this place to another place. He colluded with Camora and bought a large area of abandoned quarries to fill toxic waste.

Roberto works very hard. This is not hard work. Business trips are easy and enjoyable. Rafting on the streets of Venice makes people feel refreshed. However, he soon discovered that this was not a pleasant job. The garbage buried by Frank caused cancer in the neighboring villages and caused the bright fruits to smell. Roberto became silent, which was different from what he had imagined. He didn't want his father, who worked in intensive care in the hospital, to know that he was doing such a damaging job. He chose to quit, and chose to give up this promising and lucrative job.

"I have been thinking, maybe I should quit this job."

"What?"

"What I said is true, I am not suitable for this job."

"We did a great job ."

"No, Frank, I I don’t want to do it anymore, goodbye, sorry."

"Hey, Roberto, do you think this job sucks? For the Italian economy, how much work people like me have done, do you know? I have saved many companies With a lot of money, countless workers have kept their jobs, do you know? Stop and take a good look. What do you see? Debt! It is because of us that these people can live to this day."

"How do you help them, I can see it. If you want to help a Venetian worker keep his job, you have to destroy the life of another family in Naples."

"It's all like this, and it's not my decision. It was made by someone else. The problem is for us to solve. I did not produce the chromium waste, nor did I dig the quarry."

"Does this business like this?"

"That's right."

"I don't want to do this. I'll tell you. Not the same."

"What about you?"

"I'm different from you."

"Go and make your pizza!'I'm different from you'? Don't think you are so good! Give you a chance, don't you! Go dead! Come on!"

Roberto made a choice, choosing to live a poor life and be worthy of his conscience. But his choice did not change the reality in the slightest. The candlelight of this human nature seemed so insignificant and weak in the thick dark night. But I still have to thank the screenwriter for this main line. After all, in faraway China, there are many young people who can see themselves in Roberto. Although we don’t know if we will make the same choice as Roberto, that enchanting and bright candle can indeed make people feel warm and want to change!

Don Hilo and Paliquas are two old men.

Don Hilo worked for Camora and was responsible for giving red envelopes to those who contributed to the gang. Their husband or son either died for the gang or went to jail for the gang. Don Hilo is a kind person. He would drink coffee with them and help them mopping the floor, but he can't do anything about their situation. He is just a money-giver. In the eyes of the gang, as long as there is a little relationship with the opponent, it is the enemy. Don Hilo was caught by his opponent. In order to save his life, he could only choose to betray. But the temporary life-saving is nothing more than drinking poison to quench thirst. His ending, like Toto, will inevitably lead to no return.

Pariques is a tailor, working in a factory controlled by Camora. He is a character used by others, drained every bit of energy to make money for the boss. He took a job privately and worked as a technical instructor for a Chinese businessman’s factory. In the Chinese factory, he was respected. People there bowed to him, called him a master, cooked delicious Chinese food for him, told him about Chinese customs, and had a lot of income. He is very happy and content. But Camora found out about him and killed the Chinese businessman on his way to work, saving him his life, and wanted to continue to use him. After Paliquas was sober, he no longer wanted to be controlled by the gang, and he didn't want to live a soulless life. He gave up the job of tailoring, which he had done almost all his life, and drove a truck. He also had to support his wife and children. At a service station on the expressway, he saw on TV that his evening dress was worn by a female star to attend the ceremony, which was greatly appreciated and praised by the media. Oh, that dress cost only 30 euros. Now, it is estimated to have increased by a thousand times! He just smiled, his face indifferent like a cloud.

Five main lines, six characters, their destiny, controlled by the invisible hand of Camora, this tangible body, helpless and sad. They have all chosen a path that they think is the right one, but I would rather think that they have no choice, no, no right to choose. Because this is in Gomora, this sinful city has Camora, which is pervasive and controls their lives and lives all the time. Individual people are always in a weak and tragic position in front of a systematic and large-scale organization.

Gomora, it can be Naples, it can be Rio de Janeiro, it can be Los Angeles, it can be Cape Town, it can be any city in the world. Those Camora, not always violence and blood, can be tender, can feasting, can be under the guise of justice and truth, you can't escape, there is nothing to hide.

What we can do may be just like Roberto, like Pariquas, choose a path that we think is right, and work hard to go on.

It’s a long night, so go all the way!
