Actually, I am quite interested in this kind of cult stories. So, after reading the synopsis, I downloaded it to my mobile phone early. Until these two days, because I had time, I took time to watch this movie.

The background of the story is set at the end of the 19th century. Malkan and Quinn formed a religious organization. Let's say that the major religions now spread all over the world were probably regarded as cults at the beginning. At the end of the 19th century, it was too late to set up a religious organization. I used to think that one of the hallmarks of cults was the restriction of personal freedom, but I don’t think so anymore. The reason why small cult organizations want to control personal freedom is that the easy entry and exit of members is dangerous to the organization and can easily reveal secrets. And the power of the three major religions around the world is naturally not afraid of members coming in and out easily. Their territory has expanded from a relatively closed space to the world, so personal control is a common feature of religions, not a feature of cults.

Thomas used to be a missionary who came to China in the late Qing Dynasty. According to the background of the story, it was roughly the case of the Boxers. In China, Thomas was tortured to death by farmers in North China. He survived this situation and his will was exceptionally strong. He is a child of a family, and keeping his family business is the most basic requirement, and it is better to carry forward. However, he abandoned his family business and went to teach in the Far East. The parent-child relationship has so far been very bad. Only his sister in the family supports him. At that time, many Western countries had missionaries in China. These people, some of whom are well-funded spies, use missions to cover their intelligence gathering work. There are also people who are a little more idealistic, and their lives are more difficult. It is very possible that the younger sister was Thomas' patron during his stay in China.

After returning to China, he heard that his sister was kidnapped by a cult, and Thomas immediately couldn't sit still. During the first half of the film, Thomas kept his eyes red, as if he was drunk, and his whole person was engulfed in hatred. He pretended to convert to this sect and went to this small island.

In fact, the cult in the film is very typical. In a closed environment, leaders tend to be lawless. Any closed environment cannot be a paradise, and ordinary people must be deprived of their freedom. The leaders of this cult are Malcolm and Quinn. Matthews is a founding member? The qualifications are also relatively old. They are a guard of more than ten people to defend their authority. I feel that the most frightening thing is the masked butcher and the trapped old woman.

The story is actually quite simple. After going to the island, Thomas began to inquire about his sister's whereabouts. At this time, the cult organization headed by Malcolm was his opponent. Everyone on this island is his potential enemy. Yang Zirong also faced this situation when he first went to Weihu Mountain. Almost all undercover agents had similar concerns when they first started their work. But relatively speaking, I feel that the situation Yang Zirong is facing is more dangerous. He went up the mountain as a contributor, and when he went up the mountain was the Ninth King Kong. In addition, the mountain eagle is very gloomy, and he arranged it secretly, and it can be said that he has been under attention. And Thomas, as an ordinary newbie, is not paid attention to by anyone. At this time, Thomas's disadvantage was that he had no knowledge of the internal situation of the cult gang, and his status was relatively low and his activities were very poor. But as if Yang Zirong had the support of the bachelor, Thomas soon found a helper, the boy who was going to elope with his girlfriend. With the help of the boy, he started his own investigation. In the course of the activity, he discovered the secret of sin on this island. Gradually, divisions appeared within the cult gang, and Malkan and Quinn broke apart. Speaking of it, this should be regarded as an accompanying resistance.

After saving Malkan, who was almost assassinated, Thomas' status on the island suddenly changed. The Prophet trusted, and the Prophet's daughter fell in love with Thomas. The arrangement of this bridge section feels very deliberate, and it makes sense to analyze it with the theory of resistance.

In the end, Thomas failed to return after destroying the magic nest. It may be that I think too much, even if there are not many people dead in cult movies, even if it is fresh, still wishing for a love?

Apostle quotes

  • [first lines]

Elaine: [in her letter] My dearest father... I pray that you have not been consumed with worry in the time that has passed since I was taken. I write to you in the hope that you will put an end to my suffering on this wretched island. My captors inform me that if I am to survive, you must travel here alone with the means to purchase my freedom. That should a man of lawbe sent in your stead, it would seal my fate. Father, I grow weary.

Charles: [now reading it out loud] I fear our Lord no longer hears my prayer. Yet still, I pray for your presence... for my savior. Please bring me home. Your beloved daughter...

  • Prophet Malcolm: [fervently to his congregation] Where is the land which has no call for wars? Hmm? Arms? Money? Nor taxes? Well, that land is here. No tax-gatherer's bill shall ever threaten our church door! We, I tell thee, we... we are free men.
