On the value of bad movies: Burnt

Seeing that the score is very low (especially on Rotten Tomatoes), I thought it would be a bad movie. Later, I was inexplicably moved by it. After thinking about it, I still felt that writing a short review couldn't get all the thoughts out, so I decided to write a film review.

I have to have some evidence to prove to myself that I was moved by this bad movie. Isn't it a shame?

First of all, the food is well-photographed. But what touches me most is the serious attitude of the protagonist Adam to food. Many people may think that a perfectionist like him is just asking for hardship. Although I admit that my cooking skills are completely inaccessible to the countertops, I have always longed for someone who can turn cooking into an art. From very early on, I felt that people who can mix all kinds of materials together and take each of their characteristics to the fullest to present good food are really cool. Perhaps the pursuit of perfection sounds unrealistic, but the pursuit of one's own perfection and the pursuit of a wonderful experience for those who taste food is not a way of life. To be honest, after watching the movie, there is an urge to eat such exquisite food.

Excluding the food, I also find it interesting to set the character. Helene's enthusiasm and yearning for cooking were first suppressed under the self-esteem life, and then broke ground. For other supporting roles, I really like the different settings for Adam's friends. From a right-hand man to a traitor, Michel, to Tony who is always willing to support him, and Reece, who is like an enemy and will help him at critical moments. Although these characters greatly reduce the "inspirational" part (described later), their appearance brings more fun to the movie. What I must admit here is that a lot of plots and dialogues in the movie happened so fast that I repeated some key parts. But even so, I still feel that there are many lines and plots that I don't fully understand. Therefore, the analysis of the role is still very basic, rather awkward stage. I can only wait for the next time I finish reading it before doing a more detailed analysis. (This has nothing to do with what I want to express, but I still want to say: I think Tony is so pitiful afterwards, especially that kiss is very distressed.)

Finally, talk about the theme of the movie. Such a movie should be marked as an inspirational movie. I scanned some film reviews and saw that many people said that they thought it should have been an inspirational film, but it was ruined by the protagonist's irritable temper and the way of constantly relying on others. I really don't think so. The most fascinating part of this movie is that it is too easy to think that this is a story about how the grumpy chef got three stars by luck. But in fact, it was discovered at the end that the whole movie is about how a person finds his place in society. Such an analysis may sound off-center, but it is not.

First of all, although I was puzzled by Adam’s irritability many times during the movie watching (it’s really shameful to waste food, and it’s not cooked food, it’s just imperfect. You can eat it yourself or give it to someone in need) ), but his character is actually a very important part of the movie theme. Adam's persona was not an ordinary person from the beginning. A complicated family background. When I was young, I went to Paris to chase my dreams and saved money. I worked hard for cooking, taking drugs, smoking and playing with women. I ruined my ten-year effort. I returned to the culinary world after peeling 1,000,000 oysters... this It is deceptive to say that the experience is not complicated. Such a setting adds color to his character, which makes viewers easily curious, such as "Why did he ruin himself?" or "A person like him, is it really satisfying to get Samsung?" These The problem has been bothering me, and I finally understand when the movie ends. It is because Adam is such a person who pursues perfection, because he is a hot-tempered person, and because he is a particularly lucky person, that's why he has the center of the movie.

At the end of the movie, Samsung's results were not expressed in lines. Although there was a scene where Tony said something to Adam, and both of them laughed, the director was not sure about the ending. The movie is over when I am still looking forward to seeing what to prove in the next scene. At that moment, I understood that the story from the beginning to the end of the movie is about a person looking for himself. Adam, who pursues perfection in this way, cannot be satisfied in life. Because of his childhood experience, he just kept trying to reach the top. Maybe it's because I have a good friend who is also such a person, so I am particularly familiar with this feeling. This kind of pursuit really has no end. If at the end of the movie, the director just presented a smile satisfied by Samsung's Adam, the story would really be ruined. But fortunately, the director chose to give Adam something else. Because of his aversion to relying on others, Adam fought alone before the climax of the movie. Although he seemed to be cooperating with the team when assigning work, although he was full of malice and accusations against the team, he had always been dissatisfied with himself. He can't stand himself who needs others, can't stand this imperfection. He thought he had found the meaning of life in the kitchen, but in fact he lost himself in the kitchen. So is Adam lucky? I'm not good at talking. But in everyone's life, there will always be some supporters and betrayers.

The ending of the film is very subtly connected to the core of the whole film. Although from the smile, the audience can guess that Adam got what he wanted. But in fact, we already knew at that time that the result was no longer important to him. Rather than pursuing perfection and doing the two key dishes to get a good evaluation, Adam chose to believe in himself and his team. At the time of this shot, the whole movie has already begun to end. When he finally fully understood his needs, he understood how to be truly satisfied. It's not about pursuing the unattainable perfection over and over, but doing everything you can to do everything you can, forgiving yourself, and even more forgiving others. This shot is the core of the whole movie, and it is also the most exciting moment of the whole movie.

To put it aside, there is actually a section in the deleted clip where Adam was venting his anger for the bullied service, but it was later cut off. (Check later and come back to modify this part)

I envy Adam. Not envious of his cooking skills, nor envious of his Michelin achievements. What I envy is that he found his own meaning, understood his role in society, and got psychological satisfaction.

This bad movie also showed me a lot of things.

I really like the tone of this movie. Cooper is a real man. Recently, I have been thinking more about how to be a real man. I have a persistent pursuit of goals. Looking forward to it~

The rhythm is okay. Emotional progress is good. For example, if you think you messed up, you don’t lose your temper and walk away silently. In the end, when the Michelin people really come, they just treat it with a normal heart. But the male protagonist is too scumbag in terms of love, right? Why does everyone love him so much.

  • Dr Rosshilde: In my experience, people who come in here and make silly comments are generally frightened of what they might reveal if they really took the time to be themselves.

Adam Jones: Oh, I've been myself since the '90s.

  • Reece: I heard an idiotic rumor. You're going for third star.

Adam Jones: I heard an idiotic rumor that you've *gotten* yours. Then I found out it's true.

    Reece: That must have hurt.

Adam Jones: Eh, I was on heavy painkillers at the time.
