Sinking the world still needs fairy tales

Following "Frozen 2" in 2019, Disney Animation Studios finally produced a new work: "The Legend of the Dragon" in 2021. When Disney is no longer satisfied with repeating the fairy tales of princes and princesses, and is no longer willing to be confined to the established prison, it has a description of the grand world and the pursuit of original stories, so the audience sees "Frozen" " "Crazy Zoo" and "Invincible Broken Ring" are such superb works. Although "Legend of Finding the Dragon" cannot be compared with these predecessors, it is definitely worth watching.

"Legend of Dragon Hunting" uses Southeast Asian elements to build a fantasy world, telling a lost and recovered story, and ultimately refers to the trust and disputes of mankind. Today, when remakes are popular, it is rare to be able to present a story with a very original spirit. Although, behind the scenes, it is inseparable from the layout of Disney's huge commercial map. But this is indeed a business masterpiece with a smooth and unrestrained world view.

It is not easy to create a whole new world. All roles, details, objects, and settings require a combination of imagination and execution. This is the result of a team of hundreds of people behind the scenes spending several years.

Today's animation technology is so vivid and breathtaking, and some scenes even make me think that I am watching a live-action movie. If you add a bit of childishness, it will make you even more addictive. Childhood is simply one of the biggest motivations for us to watch Disney animation. As a qualified cartoon, it makes people feel happy and joyful. Needless to say that the heroine Raya’s mount is "Tutu", that naive little beast with a shell, which has followed it since childhood, and grew up in the same boat; not to mention the cute-looking "liar" in the film. "Baby", the experience of discarding the dark and turning the Ming will never make her hateful, and the three little monkeys who walked with her also contributed a lot of cheerful scenes; not to mention that the little boy in the film should not bear loneliness. At the age of staying optimistic, claiming to be the captain, raising the sails and sailing into the distance...

No amount of innocence can conceal the final theme. Laya has gone through thousands of sails to awaken the god Dragon Xisu, hoping that the world ruled by the black demon can return to light, and that his relatives who have been petrified can live again. However, everything, does not care about the magnificent power, does not care how clever means, in the end it is only about the inner choice. That is the trust between people.

This kind of simplified theme, of course, tends to be low and juvenile, but it is the most suitable and suitable expression for a cartoon. Especially in this era when it is no longer simple and clear, everything will be pity upon seeing the world after the epidemic. The whole world is chaotic, whether it is a natural disaster or a man-made disaster. The movie gives the answer. It is the means, solidarity and trust that bring the world back to order. The film also gives obvious answers.

Such an answer always allows people to re-examine the present moment we are in after an adventure in the world of light and shadow. We no longer believe in the love story of the prince and the princess, but we are still willing to watch a fairy tale that has nothing to do with love when we take off the mask and steal the joy. We do not know why we are here, we do not know why we laugh, we do not know why we are moved and weep. We are still us, do we want a fictional princess to tell us the truth of life? Do we want those truths to clarify our lives? Do we want our lives to be free from worries.

Perhaps we can be stronger, we can still live for ourselves in an ordinary life, we can still move towards the light in the dark night of tragic betrayal, and we can take the first step when we have no choice. "The Legend of Dragon Hunting" says so.

Whether Raya in the film can be included in the ranks of Disney's official princesses, representing Southeast Asia as a new princess, may still need further commercial verification. But what is certain is that in this sinking world, we need fairy tales.

45/100, although it can map and exhort society in any era, emphasizes the reconciliation between parties and nations, it has an idealistic vision of "Utopia". However, the game narrative (running, leveling, leveling up, collecting partners, and BOSS battles) created in gorgeous packaging makes the possibly extended interior seem unnecessary. The whole is completely rigid and kitsch. The only thing I really want to praise is the fusion of electronic music. The world music style OST. In fact, instead of being obsessed with the illusion of five-color auspicious clouds, you might as well look at the world around you, and you will find that such a movie is extremely naive.

Raya and the Last Dragon quotes

  • Raya: [Referring to Benja] You remind me of him.

Sisu: Oh yeah? Strong? Good looking? With impeccable hair?

    Raya: Hopeful.

  • [first lines]

Raya: I know what you're thinking. A lone rider. A distopian world. A land that's gone to waste. How did this world get so broken? Well, that all began 500 years ago. Kumandra. This is what we used to be when our land was whole, and we lived harmoniously alongside dragons, magical creatures who brought us water, and rain, and peace. It was paradise. But then, the druun came. A mindless plague that spread like wildfire. Multiplying as they consumed life and turned everyone they touched into stone. The dragons fought for us the best they could, but it wasn't enough. That's when the mighty Sisu Datuu, the last dragon, concentrated all her magic into a gem and blasted the druun away. Everyone that was turned to stone came back... except the dragons. All that was left of Sisu was her gem. It should have been this big inspirational moment where humanity united over her sacrifice, but instead, people being people, they all fought to possess the last remnant of dragon magic. Borders were drawn. Kumandra divided. We all became enemies, and the gem had to be hidden, but that's not how the world broke. That didn't truly happen until 500 years later when I came into the story.
