Dexiu has sacrificed his whole life for others. When he was young, he was forced to be separated from his father and sister due to the war and fled, and came to the international market with his mother and younger siblings. At school, he met Da Jiu, his lifelong friend. When he finally grew up, in order to earn enough money for his younger brother to go to college, he and Dajiu went to Germany to work as miners. Being a miner is so dangerous that Deok-soo nearly died several times. Life in Germany was hard, but he met his beloved wife. After returning to China, he used the money he earned to buy a big house for his family. But the good times did not last long, and later he participated in the Vietnam War in order to buy a dowry for his sister and buy back his aunt's shop. After the war, he was lame. In the end, Deok-soo finally grows old, has many children, and the family becomes lively. I've always wondered why Deok-soo doesn't live for himself. He could have gone to a good university and fulfilled his dream of being a captain. He could have avoided the war, leaving his legs with limited mobility.
It wasn't until I watched the scene where Deok-soo spoke to his imaginary dad at the end that I finally understood. Dexiu lived up to his promise to his father all his life. The fate of the individual is always linked to the fate of the nation. Everyone is a humble person, but also a great person.
