stuffy

I watched this film without knowing the gossip about Director Hong and Kim Min Hee. After reading it, I turned to this comment on Rotten Tomatoes "It'll likely take a diehard Hong fan to truly admire..." and couldn't help but smile.

Stuffy, extremely stuffy.

95% of the scenes are dialogue. The rest is that the heroine smokes, hums songs, and smells flowers.

The fixed camera is a long shot, and there is an empty scene without music for more than ten seconds before the characters enter the screen. When I watched this kind of shot before, there was usually a narration "Let's take a look at this scene recorded by a bank surveillance probe".

In a multi-person scene, when you want to highlight the speaker, you can zoom in without changing the camera. It is so simple and rude that it reminds me of my wedding video.

The dialogue is also completely rambling, burying the words the director wants to say here and there.

Of course, the overall situation is not bad, and the emotions are expressed. Jin Minxi, who has a flat appearance and wears the same black coat in the whole film, really has a kind of wild charm under suppression. The director abandoned his wife and children and made such a film to directly reflect himself to the story. (The director in the play bluntly said, "I'm filming my own love story, there is no script, I'm shooting a little here and there"). Like many Korean films, the supporting roles are still very good, very natural, very accurate, and the transition of expressions is very natural, which is extremely challenging in a long shot of more than 10 minutes.

It's just that I still find it a little wayward and lazy to tell a story entirely through dialogue. Personally, I'm a fan of the old school "dont tell it, show it".

  • Young-hee: You can't love, so you cling to life, right?

  • Sang-won: When you love, you must, in your reasoning about that love, start from what is highest, from what is more important than happiness or unhappiness, or that sin or virtue in their accepted meaning, otherwise you must not reason at all.
