Bi Dafei: A few words

French director Jacques Odia’s 2018 works, I just finished watching it. It’s quite interesting, just a few words. 1. The English title The Sisters Brothers means sisters and brothers. The domestic films are obviously transliterated, why not use free translation? I am afraid that someone will misunderstand it, thinking it is the Niang Pao brothers, but in fact, this is a Western movie. The two brothers have big beards and they are not mothers at all. 2. "The Sisters Brothers" is the name of the brothers in the arena. Why do they have such a name? It is not explained in the film. Maybe the director is for funny purposes. If it is translated into Brother Overlord Flower in China, it may be possible, haha. 3. This film should belong to the warmth of the western film, two brothers and one drama. 4. There are a lot of story lines in this drama, brother line, mother-child line, friend line, men's and women's line, and entrepreneurial line. It is mainly a chemist who wanted to bring a few people to create a new harmonious society in the western United States. Unfortunately, the lofty ambitions are not paid. By the way, there is another line of fortune for the gold prospectors, and the above are five bright lines. 5. The commander gave the brothers a killing order. The father of alcoholism is the eternal pain of the brothers. These are two dark lines. 6. At the end of the story, the brothers return to their homes and their mothers, their spirits are redeemed, and the play ends. In the future, mother and son will lead a rural life, right? The ancient road is westerly and thin horses, and there are people with small bridges and flowing water. Maybe this is the case. Anyway, they killed the mayor halfway and grabbed a lot of money. There are still a lot of gold scoured. They are not bad for money. 7. This ending is not very western!

4.5 I didn't know why Odia wanted to make a Western until I saw half of it, until the amputation finally understood: this is a typical Odia scene! It is not so much that he wants to "remodel" a Western movie, it is better to say that he wears a type of vest, and he still explores the complexity of people in different contexts as always. Simply put, it is to show what makes people cruel . Raheem in the Prophet was split into two people here, and amputation/castration was the axis of their conversion. It's very interesting that the film's handling of brothers' violence against others is usually very concise, alienating and even comical, but it does not shy away from violence between brothers (including the scene of amputation), because the feeling of pain can only be produced in Intimacy, direct gaze, and emotional identification. So what kind of warmth is not warm, there is no such thing, violence is the only way for people to survive in the west, it is the eternal motif of human beings, idealism and sympathy for others have no right to survive at all.

The most favorite part of the North Film Festival. Anti-genre Westerns, the blend of tradition and modernity, the lives of cowboys are also changing. The two leading roles played perfectly, with intriguing changes in strength and weakness, while the supporting roles were relatively inferior. My favorite is the scene of the old house in my hometown at the end, which shows the tenderness in the director's heart.
