Not sad enough to be a poet, not indifferent enough to be a philosopher, but sober enough to be a cripple.

Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker.

And every minute Charlie squats in the Bush, he gets stronger.

All that matters is that you are alive.

You are alive, captain.

That's the truth.

If I had 10 divisions of those men, then our troubles here would be over very quickly.

You have to have men who are moral, and at the same time, who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling, without passion, without judgement.

Without judgement.

Because it's judgement that defeats us.

The director's cut version is worthy of being the best Vietnam War film, and it can actually increase the depth of the war film's connotation to the meaning of religious theology. The heart is shocked so much that after watching it, the whole person is blurred. The red warm color is very poetic. It also satirizes the end of the war, the third act full of religious rituals directly sublimated the whole movie. Brando has not many scenes but is very bright, as if looking at the war from the perspective of God and re-defining this war!

Apocalypse Now quotes

  • Willard: How many people had I already killed? There were those six that I knew about for sure. Close enough to blow their last breath in my face. But this time, it was an American and an officer. That wasn't supposed to make any difference to me, but it did. Shit... charging a man with murder in this place was like handing out speeding tickets in the Indy 500. I took the mission. What the hell else was I gonna do?

  • Kurtz: What do you call it when the assassins accuse the assassin? A lie. A lie and we have to be merciful.
