A constitutive exception is something of both inside and outside that makes up whole and meaningful of a filed or a space or a event. The evacuation is an event that is forced to a corner, the beach in the film and the only port from which around 300,000 soliders are going to aboard the ship to return to Britain.
First, the event itself is a constitutive exception that makes up the heroic spirit and also a cowarding retreat. It is a paradox that deserves the applaud and also constitutes nothing but a retreating after suffering tremendous loss. What makes the event a rommance instead of a shameful survival is the intrusion or salvation, not from the great carriership or destroyer as expected, but the heroic civilian, and also the orderly and quiet withdrawal. That is also why Churchill addresses the evacuation as a victory in deliverance, while the returned soldiers cannot bear to look at the newspaper and people's eyes.
Whithin the event itself, there are also some concrete and specific particularity that lies across the borders and thus as a particular exception to their own universality. Solider Tommy is the onley one left alive from an ambush. He is in the last pair to board a hospital ship to return the wound to Britain, pretending with another French solider in rescuer's uniform, but is ordered to get off from the ship. French soldier is an absolute exception in British army, who stands out different and remains silent all the time. These two overheard the talk between commanders, which says that the evacuation capactiy only can save 30,000. The overheard talk increases their aloofness from the crowd of British soliders and puts them on a position whithin and also outside the British army. This line of exceptions also include the teenager hand George who did bad at school but want to become a hero in the battle, unluckily knocked by the shell-shock solider on the backhead and died. What makes him a hero later in the newspaper is not his behavior but his secret wish which he told before he dies; the shell-shock solider, who was rescured by the civilian yacht Moonstone but accidentally killed the teenager hand George; pilot Farrier who oversees the safety of the evacuating army and rescuing ship till the last drop of gas but was arrested by the Germans; also the commander Bolton who organised and coordinates the whole rescuing operation but was left at Dunkirk as the exception to assist French evacuation. What makes him a hero later in the newspaper is not his behavior but his secret wish which he told before he dies; the shell-shock solider, who was rescured by the civilian yacht Moonstone but accidentally killed the teenager hand George; pilot Farrier who oversees the safety of the evacuating army and rescuing ship till the last drop of gas but was arrested by the Germans; also the commander Bolton who organised and coordinates the whole rescuing operation but was left at Dunkirk as the exception to assist French evacuation.pilot Farrier who oversees the safety of the evacuating army and rescuing ship till the last drop of gas but was arrested by the Germans; also the commander Bolton who organised and coordinates the whole rescuing operation but was left at Dunkirk as the exception to assist French evacuation .pilot Farrier who oversees the safety of the evacuating army and rescuing ship till the last drop of gas but was arrested by the Germans; also the commander Bolton who organised and coordinates the whole rescuing operation but was left at Dunkirk as the exception to assist French evacuation .
These soliders, civilian or commander, each in their own way, makes their community a meaningful whole. What makes them special is that they stand different from their surroundings, either contradicting with the place or the group from which they come from, or the left -over of their communities, or the overseeer of the whole communities. They, however, makes the space where they used to stand a meaningful whole. It is their position or the place they occupy that gives the meaning to their own behavior and renders the field meaningful and complete.
