Zombie Shaun: Dark Humor and Otaku Fantasy

I thought it was a horror zombie movie, but I didn't expect it to be a comedy

The male protagonist is an ordinary person, facing a life crisis that everyone will experience: the confusion and pressure of young working-class young people at the bottom of their thirties - just graduated, with mediocre qualifications, living on shared rent, marriage, love and family relations The crisis is looming, and life begins to change from carefree to middle-aged with various responsibilities.

He has two very different roommates—

One is his good friend, a dead fat house in the true sense, eating and drinking for more than five years, a hedonist and hippie, the spokesperson of house and mourning culture, the only thing he can do every day is play games; One is "currently charged", usually in a suit and tie, well-organized, and has long accepted the rules of the real world. The two became two extremes under the same roof, and they often quarreled.

And the male protagonist happens to be stuck in the middle of them, with split thoughts and a dilemma. On the one hand, he looks forward to marriage and faces major responsibilities in life, but he does not have the courage to face it directly. Under the pressure of this contradiction, his spirit became increasingly numb and he lived in a "zombie" state, which was why his girlfriend wanted to break up with him.

There is one scene that is particularly ironic. The male protagonist dances with his friends in a bar after breaking up. When he wakes up and goes to the supermarket to buy ice cream, he does not notice the mutated people around him. This can probably be understood as the male protagonist's heart. He is so numb that he will not take the initiative to pay attention to everything in the real world, or the spirit of the male protagonist has been assimilated with zombies.

The zombie crisis made the depressed and frustrated dead man Sean suddenly become a leader and a hero. He became tenacious and decisive, with amazing fighting power. He was recognized by his girlfriend and affirmed by others. Friends are as good as ever. He gradually realized that he was not so decadent, and that the people around him were not all that bad. This process is the awakening and socialization of the protagonist. He walked out of his own little world and will face new challenges. This is also The ultimate fantasy of an otaku, able to defeat the current charge in the field that he is good at.

However, when rescuing his companions, Sean's personal heroism cannot be ignored. Not only did he not follow the advice of experts to isolate at home, but he also took the risk of his own relatives and friends and traveled thousands of miles to Winchester just to be able to smoke and drink.

The story doesn't have much turbulence, except for the scene where David is opened by a zombie, which looks a bit "meal", everything else is quite dramatic.

But in the end, it is mentioned that zombies have become a part of people's daily life, and some people have been able to keep zombies at home - while the male protagonist and his girlfriend live together, they also open a small room to keep his good friends. Otaku (has turned into a zombie)

I gave an extra star for this ending (´-ω-`)

Shaun of the Dead quotes

  • Ed: See? You don't need Liz to have a good time.

    Shaun: Oh, don't, man.

Ed: No! Go ahead, look at me. Can I just say one more thing? I'm not gonna say, you know, there's plenty more fish in the sea. I'm not going to say if you love her, let her go. And I'm not going to bombard you with clichés. But what I will say is this?

    [chuckling]

Ed: It's not the end of the world.

  • Shaun: As Bertrand Russell once said, "The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation." I think we can all appreciate the relevance of that now.

Liz: Was that on a beer mat?

Shaun: Yeah, it was Guinness Extra Cold.

    Liz: I won't say anything.

    Shaun: Thanks.
