Before sunset, before sunrise, before midnight, there was a boyhood…

"Empire" magazine interviewed director Linklater: "What would happen if we made a sequel and continued the story of the male protagonist?" He jokingly assumed: "The male protagonist went to college, graduated, and traveled to Europe a few years later. On the train, he met a girl who made his heart...

Bittersweet The most missed taste in growing up

The expectation for this film began when it was a blockbuster during the Berlin Film Festival, and then I learned that it was the director who loved the series, and the film itself was unique and could not easily imitate the shooting method, which gave rise to a strong curiosity and...

In twelve years of shooting, Linklater is definitely the most talkative director in the world. Life is plain and trivial, and growing pains are gentle and delicate. Life is always full of farewells and confession, but I still believe that the people who should meet will meet eventually.

I went to the preview today, and the director and starring came to meet the audience. This movie is so shit. Its production itself is a performance art about time. You can literally see the passage of time on the screen, children grow up and adults get older. This reassures us of the magic of movies in an age where we don't believe in stories on the screen. This is clearly time-space compression magic, time travel practiced with the flesh.

    Boyhood quotes

    • Dad: [while canvassing for the 2008 Presidential Election] Hey, grab that McCain sign, would you?

      Mason: Dad, isn't that illegal?

Dad: Just put it in the car. I'm being patriotic.

    • Mom: [Mason is leaving for college] This is the worst day of my life.

Mason: What are you talking about?

Mom: [Starts crying] I knew this day was coming. I just... I didn't know you were going to be so fucking happy to be leaving.

Mason: I mean it's not that I'm that happy... what do you expect?

Mom: You know what I'm realising? My life is just going to go. Like that. This series of milestones. Getting married. Having kids. Getting divorced. The time that we thought you were dyslexic. When I taught you how to ride a bike. Getting divorced... again. Getting my masters degree. Finally getting the job I wanted. Sending Samantha off to college. Sending you off to college. You know what's next? Huh? It's my fucking funeral! Just go, and leave my picture!

Mason: Aren't you jumping ahead by, like, 40 years or something?

Mom: I just thought there would be more.
