The Movie "The Big Red Lanterns Hanging High"

"Raise the Red Lantern" is a film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li. It mainly tells the story of the heroine, Song Lian, who was persecuted by feudal ethics after marrying into a wealthy family. It shows the director's concern for the low status of women in the old society. Sympathy, satire, and a critique of feudal customs.

As we all know, director Zhang Yimou has always been very particular about the use of audio-visual language, and this film is no exception.

Is the Chen House a huge metaphor for this society?

The film has been studied by many, and the finely polished details and shots have stood the test of time. Many people have paid attention to the symbols and metaphors behind hanging lanterns, kicking feet, roof huts, etc. However I want to say something different.

The most shocking thing about this story is that the expressions of all the people are indifferent and cold, as if the death of one or two servants and aunt has nothing to do with...

      Why is Songlian... so "stupid"

A person's stupidity usually has two possibilities, one is stupidity with IQ deficiency, and the other is stupidity with emotional intelligence deficiency. For most normal people, speaking stupid things and doing stupid things are all because of insufficient emotional intelligence.

The stupidity of emotional intelligence is divided into two types. The first is stupidity who does not even understand the unspoken rules of society, and the second is stupidity...

It looks feudal from the outside, what I see is ZZ

First of all, a set of systems, or rules, and various senses of ritual were designed. Everything seems to be done according to the rules. As the biggest beneficiary and the culprit, the master plays the role of reconciling contradictions. As long as a few wives fight, it is inevitable to flatter the master. The master always holds the last law on the scale, and the wives will always be cruel to their opponents. , and never point the finger at the source of evil. Everyone...

How dare I hide my face, I was born without a face

The maid Yan'er was frozen to death because she refused to admit her mistake, and the burnt lantern was ashes as hope. She is the person with the lowest status in the manor. She has no culture, no appearance, no knowledge, and no means. She has served people all her life and tried her best to be a wife and get rid of her slave life. In the end, she failed. What's wrong? Should I be born a slave?

Further up are the wives. The second wife is like a dog who...

The extreme of Zhang Yimou's photographic art is also the extreme of self-oriental morbid fantasy. It is not so much the Republic of China as it is the harem of the Ottoman Sultan. The director's name was changed to a famous Western artist, and it was not...

In the novel, Songlian's changes are due to the ancient well, but in the film, her changes are downplayed, and she is a strong woman from beginning to end. The image of the faded master, the master who shows his face from beginning to end (exposing his nipples) implies that the "invisible hand" is manipulating the living rules of the people in the yard, and all women are dependent on male power to survive. I actually remembered the poem "Some people are alive and he is dead, and some people are...

Turn on the lights, turn off the lights, seal the lights, what are people in this courtyard? Humans are just one breath away from ghosts, humans are ghosts, and ghosts are humans. You trick me, I trick you, from summer to winter, this is a story without...

A / A single text is not necessarily without flaws. There are several dramatic conflicts and clues that are set up deliberately, and the narrative of tragic reincarnation is inevitably a bit outdated from the current point of view. However, the regret of the text really proves Zhang Yimou's unparalleled audiovisual control in this work. The inner emotions of the characters are portrayed through a relatively static and stagnant space, which is the first layer of static actuation; and the complex...

The most depressing Zhang Yimou I've ever seen, a tragic undertone of complete despair, a perfect unity of form and content, and a special sense of ritual. In this film, Laomouzi's personal aesthetics have almost reached the extreme, with great visual impact The red lanterns, the turquoise eaves and the large snowfields... The unique folk culture of the East is everywhere, and the gloomy atmosphere is shrouded in this "haunted house" that can "eat people". The slightly exaggerated artistic...

    Movie plot

During the Republic of China, there was a castle-like Chen Mansion in a town. The rich man Chen Zuoqian already has his wife Yuru, his second wife Zhuo Yun and his third wife Mei Shan. Song Lian, a 19-year-old female college student, was forced to drop out of school due to a change in her family to marry into the Chen residence, becoming the fourth concubine of Mr. Chen. According to the rules of Chen's house, when Mr. Chen wants to...

    Evaluation action

"Raise the red lantern" is one of Zhang Yimou's films with the best combination of form and content, and its aesthetic form and allegorical symbolism are far superior to his later "The Golden Armor of the City". The film's satire on eastern absolutism is three-pointed. It is a bold experiment by Zhang Yimou. Such experimental films can be said to be rare in Chinese films.
The award of "Raise the red lantern" at the Venice Film Festival...

    Movie quotes

    • Songlian's mother: Rich man? If you marry a rich man, you will only be his concubine.

Songlian: Let me be a concubine. Isn't that the fate of a woman?

    • The Third Concubine: She has the face of Buddha and the heart of a scorpion.

    • The Third Concubine: Good or bad, it's all playacting. If you act well, you can fool other people; if you do it badly, you can only fool yourself, and when you can't even fool yourself, you just can fool the ghosts.
