I feel that Ian's tragedy was largely caused by his early marriage. He was still a child himself, but he had to bear the sudden family pressure. So when his daughter was born, his reaction was not joy but desperation and went out to smoke. What's more tragic is that his wife doesn't understand him at all (who can say that he understands Ian?). The movie is largely based on his wife's memoirs, and the part about his character and struggle is far more than the music part.
