"Wanda Vision": Nostalgia for Wanda's Remains

"Wanda Vision." This drama is mainly about the construction of Wanda's identity. As we all know, the vision in the title is a pun. One refers to the role of "Vision", but the focus is not on "Vision"; the focus is on Wanda's own positioning. Where did Wanda come from? Wanda's wish, Wanda's loss.

Wanda is similar to immigrants who came to the United States from inland Europe (Eastern Central Europe). She lost a family member, lost her hometown, came to America, and faced hostility. Her illusory memory bears the nostalgia of immigration. Somewhat oddly, Wanda's memory is presented in the form of an American family comedy. That is to say, she lost not only her geographical hometown but also her cultural hometown.

The drama "Wanda Vision" played down Wanda's identity tragedy. The focus is on her love-hate relationship with American culture. A brief look back at Wanda's misadventures shows that there is a kind of nostalgic decline here.

The hometown of Wanda Maximoff is Sokovia, a small fictional country in east-central Europe. Wanda has lived in a war-torn environment since he was a child. If he wants to relax, he relies on the American family comedy brought by his father. Wanda uses American drama to learn English, understand American culture, and imagine a comfortable life through American family comedy.

This seems a little ironic, because it was the United States that carried out air strikes on Wanda's hometown. Background information on Sokuvia shows that the Wanda family lives in the capital, Novigrad. The U.S. military carried out numerous airstrikes on the city. Wanda's parents died in an air raid by the U.S. military, using shells that happened to be products of Stark Industries.

Since then, Wanda has hated the United States and Stark Industries. Wanda and her brother Pietro took part in a demonstration against American imperialism. The local government was unable to protect its own citizens from the military attack of the US imperialists. At this time, Wanda participated in the super power transformation experiment of Hydra, and only with super power could he fight against the American emperor.

As a result, it appears in Avengers 2.Wanda wants Stark, Iron Man, to kill himself in fear of his own fear. Unexpectedly, Stark's fear that the manufactured product, Ultron, would bring about global destruction was realized. As a last resort, Wanda had to join the Avengers, put aside the contradictions within human beings, and fight against the common enemy. Deal with Ultron. In the battle triggered by Ultron, Wanda lost her brother, lost his hometown, and lost his revenge attempt.

Before, she had to hate Stark, and now she had to be tolerant. Look optimistically, because hatred can only make her lose more. After toleration, she was briefly reborn with visions. Wanda fell in love with the artificial person that this "enemy" participated in creating—Vision. Tragically, Thanos' gang came again and destroyed Vision. Losing his vision was the last straw that overwhelmed Wanda.

However, how can Wanda be compensated for what Wanda has lost before? Is vision alone enough? No, there is no compensation, and Vision does not belong to Wanda. Wanda has only memories. Even the two villains in "Wanda Vision" either want to take Wanda's power or destroy Wanda. Those two villains can be seen as old immigrants; Wanda is a newcomer.

Wanda is powerless to be nostalgic. Nostalgia represents the outlier, the skepticism of the new environment. Culturally, though, Wanda is not an outlier. Reenacting the family comedy in American history is American nostalgia, and it has become Wanda's nostalgia. She has long since lost her cultural hometown, and she wants to integrate into the American cultural environment.

The story of "Wanda Vision" takes place in West King Town, west-view but also a pun, which can be understood as the meaning of "Western vision". The performances here are all variations of the American imperial family comedy that Wanda has seen. She wants to live in the warm scene rendered by the American TV series.

Barely, the only thing that has the color of Wanda's hometown may only be the dress of "Scarlet Witch", which is the dress she wore on Halloween. Halloween is a spooky day for everyone, so "nostalgic" looks can be forgiven for being outlandish. However, it can be seen that Wanda has a bad impression of the Halloween she experienced in her hometown. Nostalgia is just that; even if it's bad, it makes up her identity.

She used this hidden way to express nostalgia. She may hope that this residual nostalgia can be incorporated into the new home. Overall, WandaVision is a nostalgic tale of wanderers. Wanda wanted to have a home but couldn't. Wanda faces personal misfortune as well as general loss. There is a kind of universal and lasting nostalgia here.
