German director Robert Wiene perfectly copied a nightmare into a movie. A group nightmare not only belongs to him, but belongs to that era, that group of people, and that nation.
Even more frightening is that this is a nightmare with fuzzy clues and messy, (I think, almost all of us have had this kind of life experience, in our own sleep, we are inexplicably scared, but after waking up, we don’t know what happened. ).
Is Dr. Caligari the real murderer? (Or the messenger behind the scenes) seems to be. However, there is no clear evidence in the film that can point to him. It is also possible that Francis, the narrator of the story, is the murderer himself (at least he has the motive of killing, (one of the victims is his rival).
Even, it is also possible that the story itself does not exist, as revealed at the end of the film In that way, it was just a mental patient—Francis's idiot.
