Orphans "scared" their parents

As a thriller, there are no ghosts, no supernatural, but through the excellent emotional rendering, it is frightening. I think this movie is a good inspiration for domestic movies that "can't appear ghosts".
Nightmares, miscarriages, dead babies, and thick snow, the film sets a relatively depressing tone through a variety of elements from the very beginning. Then, a series of inconsistencies and horrific moments followed.
The film also cleverly uses the audience's inertial psychology to create a good suspenseful atmosphere through various conventional means of horror films such as "follow-up", "low camera" and "soundtrack", and always mobilizes the audience's emotions. The 90-minute foreshadowing finally revealed the truth. When the decisive battle began, the hearts of the audience must have been mentioned in their throats.
In addition, the staggering acting skills of the "orphan" Isabella Furman in the film are also a major key to the success of this film.

An old maid who doesn't grow up can't afford it, and a stupid husband who cheats on it.

The plot has a big brain hole, the little girl acted super well, the movie is not a horror movie, it is more about plot/crime, it is a pity that the movie lacks the psychological portrayal of this 9-year-old woman, her childhood, her sexual growth, Other people's attitudes towards her, etc., how various specificities lead to psychological distortions that lead to crimes, the film lacks a deeper exploration of human nature, otherwise it will be on a higher level

Orphan quotes

  • [Esther and Max walk up after Daniel has shot a pigeon with his paintball gun]

    Esther: Did you kill it?

Daniel Coleman: [crying] It was just a paintball, I didn't think it'd hurt him...

[She picks up a big rock and holds it out to him]

Esther: Put it out of its misery.

    [off his look]

Esther: It's in pain. And it's your responsibility.

Daniel Coleman: It was just an accident.

Esther: If you walk away now, it'll starve to death. Is that what you want?

    [pause]

Daniel Coleman: I'm not doin' it...

[after a moment, she smashes the pigeon with the rock]

Esther: [to Max] It's all right. It's in Heaven now.

Daniel Coleman: What's wrong with you?

  • [Kate overhears Esther playing Tchaikovsky flawlessly on the piano]

Kate Coleman: You told me you didn't know how to play.

    Esther: No, I didn't.

    Kate Coleman: Yes, you did.

Esther: You offered to teach me, and I accepted.

Kate Coleman: Okay... so, then, you were just... pretending, this whole time?

Esther: I thought you would enjoy teaching me. It must be frustrating for someone who loves music as much as you to have a son who isn't interested and a daughter who can't even hear.
