Ported from IMDB.

1. A number of pieces of the set, including those used for the rooftop chase, were sold to the production of The Matrix (1999) at the end of shooting.
2. Has one of the shortest Average shot lengths (ASL) of any modern narrative production at 1.8 seconds. This means there is a cut almost every 2 seconds.
3. The name of Kiefer Sutherland's character, Daniel Schreber, is the same as that of an author of an early twentieth century book entitled "Memoirs of My Nervous Illness". He wrote it while he was institutionalized for schizophrenia, originally as an argument for his release. The book has become standard reading for many psychiatrists and psychologists, and many of the theories of both Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung were based on it (Freud never actually met Schreber, though). "Dark City" borrows heavily from the concept of "fleetingly-improvised men" which are found within Schreber's "Memoirs".
4. The prostitute is played by the Triangle's mistress. It was also her first film appearance.

Postmodern characteristics, pure and beautiful soft science fiction. Sartre said: "Existence precedes essence." Man exists first, suffers various twists and turns in this world, and then defines himself. In the film, people's thoughts are drawn away from the body, leaving only an unowned body and residual images. Only by retrieving my own memory can I have the opportunity to reshape myself, rebuild life, and create a new world. "The essence of man can only be created by his own actions. It is the hero who makes himself a hero, and the coward makes himself a coward."

Dark City quotes

  • [from the director's cut]

Mr. Hand: We're very lucky when you think about it.

    Emma Murdoch: I'm sorry?

Mr. Hand: To be able to revisit those places which have meant so very much to us.

Emma Murdoch: I thought it was more that we were haunted by them.

Mr. Hand: Perhaps. But imagine a life Alien to yours. In which you memories were not your own, but those shared by every other of you kind. Imagine the torment of such an existence....no experiences to call your own.

Emma Murdoch: If it was all you knew, maybe it would be a comfort.

Mr. Hand: But if you were to discover something different...Something....better.

  • Mr. Wall: No more Mr. Quick. Mr. Quick, dead, yes.

    Stranger: Poor, poor Mr. Quick.
