The taste of seventeen

After reading a few film reviews, they were all about John Cusack. Of course, JC played very well, but after all, the gender is different, the place of attention is different.

Probably because it is the director's debut, the film looks a little bit young and not proficient. But just like those new rock bands, you will see in them or in their music that it is obviously different from those old rockers who have been in the rivers and lakes for many years. It is the kind of hormonal breath that exudes vigor or light. This is precious, because once you are mature, mellow, mature, whatever is mature, there will no longer be anything similar to this kind of breath, which probably means that your adolescence is over. The same is true for this film. Although it is not mature enough, the youthful innocence is fascinating.

As a normal audience, of course I am watching the heroine instead of Cusack in romance films. I didn't believe it when the heroine appeared at first, wondering how the director would choose such an ordinary actor to be the heroine. However, as the plot slowly developed, I saw the alluring taste of the heroine: misty eyes, gentle smile, cute freckles, thin pajamas, bare feet. . She is always showing off what only a girl has. I think the director must love the heroine so much that she can be so beautiful.

Although there is no nudity in the whole film, the two shots in pajamas still arouse my infinite memories. The first is in the back seat of the car where "accidents" happen most often. Cusack's tremor reminds me of my past, because when I was a teenager, I also tremble out of control like him, and the other party too. The same thing is the pajamas; the second shot is at the heroine’s home, which is the so-called classic Cusack holding the tape recorder SB before standing downstairs to play music. I see the heroine tossing and turning on the bed. I don’t know why I am again. Thinking of my ten years ago, it seems that the sexual enlightenment of my teenage years is always closely related to pajamas. . . Then I felt that the director's filming was really good, perfectly showing the restless and depressed mood in front of the camera.

Of course, just like the end of the story, a teenager’s love story always has no ending. We only need to have loved and get hurt.

  • Diane Court: You don't like old people, do you?

Lloyd Dobler: Me? Sure I do.

    Diane Court: Come on.

Lloyd Dobler: Except for one thing. I used to work at a smorgasbord and the old people would flock there and they love to eat. And they just jammed their mouths, you know, and they would just eat with their mouths open and, you know, it's just too much for me. I mean, you know, you get to be thinking about how short life is and how maybe everything has no meaning. Because, you wake up and you're frying burgers and you then you're like 60 and 70 and then, you know, you check out and, you know, what are you doing? And I just don't need to think about those kind of things. So, that - that's the reason I was - But, I'm not sure I'm right, about any of that.

Diane Court: I think that's ageism and that's being prejudiced against people because they're old. Maybe their mouths don't work well as yours.

  • Diane Court: I just don't want it to get too heavy. I feel really overloaded.
