The life of "Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and social animals" a hundred years ago

All over the world, 20-40 years old are the mainstay of society, but this is also the age group with the highest suicide rate:

Japanese workers' heads were pressed into hot pot by their superiors;

Many Foxconn jumping incidents;

Suicide while lying on the subway track;

white-collar sudden death;

...

This group of people who have the heaviest work and the greatest pressure on their shoulders mocks themselves as "social animals".

Counting down a hundred years forward, the same "social animals" became the cannon fodder for capital, but they just replaced their office careers with factories.

"Metropolis" in 1927, takes you into the life of "Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and social animals" a hundred years ago.

Accompanied by the fiery and rapid symphony, all kinds of machines running extremely fast appeared on the black and white screen.

The shiny metal wheels reflect the dazzling light, creating a dizzying feeling under the multiple mirror images.

The imagery of clocks, inserted from time to time, strongly accentuates this tension.

This is the beginning of the squeezing picture of the industrial age.

Steam blooms like a fountain in the center of the high-rise steel factory.

This is the age of steam that our history textbooks are proud of.

Workers, like criminals, dressed in the same overalls, lined up neatly and shuffled through the arched tunnels in silence.

Regular square brick, standard arched structure, straight black team.

Geometric lines in this film render outrageous cold-blooded and oppressive.

The lifeless procession, head bowed down the arched passage, into the elevator, into their cage - oh no, the "station".

Social animals exist across countries and eras.

As long as there is a "metropolis", there are social animals.

    On the surface, this is an epic silent film full of imagination, with a grand story and characters, gorgeous and meticulous to perverted scene design, and the crazy group play from the second act, all shocking, I will probably never forget that artificial turntable. In a deep sense, this film also breaks through the limitations of dystopian films. It does not stop at the surface of overthrowing tyranny, but goes deep into the discussion of the argument of class coexistence, and even combines it perfectly with religion.

    German Expressionism/Contrast of Light and Shadow/Close-Up/Large Depth of Field/Parallel Montage/Experimental Nature of the Eye/Seven Deadly Sins; Madonna & Defiler: The Collision of Feminine Flesh and Iron-faced Metal; What is Revolution? Two Marys are the two ways of revolution; the top is white, the workers are black, and the regulator is gray; "the regulator of the brain and hands is the heart"; even if religion and politics are not discussed, this is a milestone.

Metropolis quotes

  • Maria: HEAD and HANDS need a mediator. THE MEDIATOR BETWEEN HEAD AND HANDS MUST BE THE HEART!

    Worker #1: But where is our mediator, Maria - ?

    Maria: Wait for him! He will surely come!

    Worker #2: We will wait, Maria...! But not much longer - - !

  • Maria: Today I will tell you the legend of THE TOWER OF BABEL... "Come, let us build us a tower whose top may reach unto the stars! And the top of the tower we will write the words: Great is the world and its Creator! And great is Man!" But the minds that had conceived the Tower of Babel could not build it. The task was too great. So they hired hands for wages. But the hands that built the Tower of Babel knew nothing of the dream of the brain that had conceived it. BABEL. BABEL. BABEL. BABEL. One man's hymns of praise became other men's curses. People spoke the same language, but could not understand each other...
