Hitchcock really is a genius! An uncomplicated murder case leads the audience all the way, creating a series of suspense and accidents. Except for hotels and cars, the filming location has hardly left the house, which shows the director's skill.

The ending of the film is different from the usual mystery: the mastermind of the murder is not brought to justice. The prosecutor's approach is somewhat suspicious of fishing and law enforcement, and at most it can prove that the female protagonist is not murder, but it cannot prove that the male protagonist designed the murder. Therefore, under this arrangement, it can be shown that the version given by the male writer is possible, but there is no substantial evidence to prove that the male protagonist did that - the killer is dead, and there is no proof. Hitchcock's intention is to make the audience think rationally about the issue of loyalty to marriage. If the heroine is executed or the hero is imprisoned, the audience's views on the issue of cheating will become extreme. Betrayal of marriage will pay a high price, but cheating does not kill, and punishing cheaters should not go to hell.

Dial M for Murder quotes

  • Tony Wendice: What makes you think he came in by this door?

    Chief Insp. Hubbard: His shoes.

    Tony Wendice: His shoes?

Chief Insp. Hubbard: The ground was soaking wet last night. If he'd come in by the garden, he'd have left mud all over the carpet. As it is, he didn't leave any marks at all, because he wiped his shoes on the front doormat.

Tony Wendice: How can you tell?

Chief Insp. Hubbard: It's a fairly new mat, and some of its fibers came off on his shoes.

    Tony Wendice: Oh, but surely...

Chief Insp. Hubbard: And there was a small tar stain on the mat, and some of the fibers show that as well. There is no question about it.

  • Chief Insp. Hubbard: There is evidence however that he was blackmailing you.

    Tony Wendice: Blackmail?

Mark Halliday: Yes, I'm afraid it's true, Tony.

Chief Insp. Hubbard: And you suggest that he came in by the window. And we know that he came in by that door.

Margot Mary Wendice: But he can't have come in that way. That door was locked. And there are only two keys. My husband had his with him, and mine was in my handbag. Here.

Chief Insp. Hubbard: You could have let him in.
