Saw this movie yesterday at a cinema near my house. I know this is not a lighthearted movie, it was very depressing most of the time while watching it, but overall it was more entertaining than I imagined.
"The Lighthouse" makes me feel that what is more impressive is the ubiquitous symbolism in it, and layers of symbols constitute the story of this intriguing. Unfortunately, there are some obscure English and allusions in the dialogue that I don't understand very well. (laughs) But I probably won't look carefully at the allusions in the second and elegant.
- Beacon: When I saw the trailer for this movie, it immediately reminded me of the "annihilation" annihilation I watched two years ago. The internal structure of the lighthouse in "annihilation" is exactly the same as the lighthouse in "the lighthouse", and the meaning of the lighthouse is also the same. Again, both films gave me a huge amount of discomfort as an audience: 30% of the time Lighthouse gave me a sense of Cthulhu and the fear of the unknown. Lighthouses are vain hope. Then I thought of Woolf's novel "to the lighthouse" and the lighthouse in "Shutter Island". I feel that "Lighthouse", like "Joker", has gradually changed from a positive symbol to a "horror" symbol.
- There are only two roles, one old and one young: are they two Thomas or the same person? Such a film expression is very similar to Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Shadow of the Far Mountains" that I recently read. In fact, there are many such routines in literary and film works, but as long as the creators dig with their hearts, they will never be outdated. After all, everyone has at least two voices in their hearts: Should I go for sweetgreen or shake shack today? I debate with myself every day. Especially in this black-and-white film frame, anyone would go crazy. The two actors showed the power dynamic of two characters (or one character) very well: swearing, drinking, revelry and dancing, and at one point in the middle I doubted whether they would have a relationship.... Although it is far from Polanski "Venus in Furs" is a little bit short, but the dialogue about "cooking good or not" is still hilarious. And near the end, Robert's explosive performance is also very impactful. It can be said to be terrifying, shocking, and a little funny.
- Mermaids, seabirds and octopus Cthulhu: These are the more classical symbols in horror movies. I haven't done a systematic study of the stories behind them, but one looks as familiar as watching American Horror Story...
At the end of the day, let's take the opportunity to complain about "American Horror Story" and American Horror Movies in general: Although this movie is not a horror movie, it still has a great impact on people's hearts and senses. Horror movies are not about jumping scares and fishing out old stalks all day, but should be like "The Shining", "The Exorcist", "Alien" and this movie, which makes people shudder and shudder.
