Throw and give to the high ughsioghdighso

I didn't understand it the first time I watched it. If the stories told by the three parties seem dark, then the last story, the real, unacceptable story, is completely dark. It subverts everything before, it is shocking, and it makes people breathless. Everything is so ugly. And this kind of ugliness is not realized by the contrast between beauty and ugliness, but by the contrast between evil and great evil. The three of them all try to portray themselves as completely white, and the differences in the three stories let people know that they are all lying, so in the eyes of the audience, the three of them are half black and half white, and when the last story comes, the images of the three are all become dark and ugly. Even today, decades later, there are few ending reversal movies that can be as shocking as Rashomon. And even in the end, the woodcutter's own so-called truth (the audience who has experienced the full range of lies will now believe the woodcutter's words are true), but he still lied and concealed the fact that he stole the dagger. Immediately, the commoners took away the children's clothes, and then told the truth that the woodcutter took the dagger, bringing the whole story to a darkest time. The monk is an idealist who is unwilling to believe that human nature is bad, while the common people are an extreme realist who thinks that bad is human nature and that it is reasonable to be bad for survival. At the darkest moment of the story, the monk lost his faith in the goodness of human beings and rejected the woodcutter's request to adopt a child. But the woodcutter's sincerity touched the monk, and he regained his confidence in human nature (in fact, the monk represents the audience in front of the screen). The woodcutter's kindness plus a baby can be seen as a seed of hope for humanity. Makes this dark to the extreme story has a dawn ending. The composition and movement of the mirror are all very clever, including the use of light, but they are not complicated and clear. The intervention of the director's technique is not strong, and only a lot of horror elements are used when depicting the psychic. It's the greatest movie I've ever seen intellectually.

The story itself is not that complicated, and multiple versions, selfish or pitiful, are derived from personal perspectives, and multiple parallel narratives make the truth unravel and add suspense at the same time. Black and white does not limit the story to the brilliance of the story, and the two actors, Shimura Joe and Mifune Toshiro, are impressive. Master Kurosawa is amazing!

Rashomon quotes

  • Woodcutter: I'm the one who should be ashamed. I don't understand my own soul.

  • Priest: A man's been murdered.

Commoner: So what? Only one? Why, up on top of this gate, there's always five or six bodies. No one worries about them.
