Trump's China Trade War and Geike's Blue Star Airline Acquisition

Recently, as Trump signed a memorandum to impose large-scale tariffs on Chinese goods, a trade war to be imposed on China appeared imminent. In response to this memorandum, the Chinese government is actively preparing for the challenge with the attitude that it will not be afraid, and will not hide.

Many media and public accounts are paying attention to the progress of this event. As a public account that writes movies, I also want to find some trade-related movies to share with you. So, "Wall Street" released in 1987 became the choice.

The content of "Wall Street" is not about international trade, but the actions of the stock market tycoon Gekko in the film have many similarities with Trump's actions on the international stage, exuding a sense of superiority and arrogance. For Gekko, making money is the only criterion for what he does; Trump on the international stage is America first.

In fact, it is not an easy task to make money or make the international community accept America first. In the movie, in order to make money, Gekko hired a number of professional stock analysts and professional legal advisors, and he also spent a lot of time studying various economic issues. He leads the direction of the entire investment, and also listens to the professional investment advice of his subordinates. President Trump, naturally surrounded by various professional think tanks, has paved the way for his strong push for America First with his seemingly wayward personnel appointments and his way of ruling the country through Twitter.

At the beginning of the movie, Gekko's stock market sniping at TEDA Paper was very beautiful. The target chosen for this acquisition case is not large. Through accurate inquiries about competitors' information and careful analysis of the shortcomings of the management of the acquisition target, he not only made a lot of money, but also achieved a concept of promoting his own money- Greedy speech. This case is very similar to Trump's choice of Saudi Arabia, a rich but not a world power, for his first visit. Moreover, Saudi Arabia is in a turbulent stage of wanting to become a father-son inheritance, and it is easy to be ripped off by the United States. As a result, the $110 billion arms sales agreement and the 10-year arms sales framework worth $350 billion were easily reached. Trump's America First philosophy has left the illusion of international recognition in people's minds.

Making money and America first will not stop, so Gekko started the acquisition of Blue Star Airlines. Gekko is aware of the difficulties of acquiring an airline. Fortunately, in the movie, Gekko's disciple Bud has a father-son relationship with the union representative of Bluestar Airlines, and is very familiar with Bluestar Airlines' operating model, so he provided him with a very reasonable acquisition plan. Of course, Budd has a premise for the acquisition plan, that is, to ensure that Blue Star Airlines will not be auctioned off by bankruptcy, but to tide over the difficulties together and turn losses into profits.

The plot is a bit like Trump and Kissinger, only their mentoring relationship is the opposite. I guess that Kissinger should have provided Trump with a lot of good advice on China-US diplomacy. I also think that Kissinger probably does not want a trade war between China and the United States.

The development in the film is that Gekko doesn't keep the promise he made to Bud, after Bud stumbles upon the idea that Gekko is going to go bankrupt and reorganize. Facing Bud's questioning, Gekko did only two things. One was to confirm whether Bud was still helping him in the acquisition of Bluestar Airlines, and the other was to stop all public discussions of Bluestar Airlines' bankruptcy and reorganization, and change it to conducted in secret.

As Gekko's apprentice, Bud of course knows that Gekko will not take action because of his opposition. The only thing he can do is to take countermeasures, even if this countermeasure will lead to prison. In the end, Bud took advantage of the illegal operation methods taught by Gekko and cooperated with Gekko's competitors to keep Blue Star Airlines. Of course, Bud is also subject to legal sanctions for illegal operations.

At present, the trade war between China and the United States has not really started. However, I agree with the views on the Internet. If Trump does not really feel pain, he will not let it go. Looking at the current stage, the negotiation intentions released by the US government and the plans for China to purchase natural gas and garbage are all like Gekko's final preparations before the attack.

Of course, the Chinese government will not be disturbed by such information. Moreover, China has many means to deal with Trump's trade war, such as soybeans, planes, and the just-started RMB crude oil futures. Although, we know that there are no winners in a trade war, and we will lose. But we know even more that people like Trump can negotiate on an equal footing only after he has shot himself in the foot.

I firmly believe that Trump's trade war will end in failure like Gekko's Blue Star acquisition.

PS: This sentence from Bud's father at the end of the movie: "Create your own business, not live by buying and selling other people's property." It's worth thinking about!

    # Dance Movie# The entertainment industry is always telling the public: "The financial industry does not create value, they are greedy and sinful." The entertainment industry and the financial industry are clinking glasses for the money they have earned through cooperation. (I love Charlie Sheen!)

Gordon Gekko: Money never sleeps, pal. Just made 800,000 in Hong Kong gold. It's been wired to you. Play with it. You've done good, but you gotta keep doing good. I've showed you how the game works. Now School's out.

Bud Fox: Mr, Gekko, I'm there for you 110%.

Gordon Gekko: No, no, no, no. You don't understand. I wanna be surprised. Astonish me, pal. New info. I don't care where or how you get it, just get it. Anything you do say may be used against you in a court of law.
