There are two gangs of gangs in the western ghetto of Manhattan. One is the Rocket gang led by White River and the other is the Shark gang led by Puerto Rican Bernardo. The two gangs hate each other and often fight each other. When a dance party was held in the West End, the two gangs danced to each other, and River's friend Tony (Richard Beymer) and Bernardo's sister Maria (Natalie Wood) fell in love at first sight. After Bernaldo found the love between the two, he forced his subordinates to take away his sister. At night, Tony stood at Maria's window calling her, and the two fell in love firmly. The next day, Maria heard that the "Shark Gang" would fight the "Rocket Gang", and asked Tony to stop it. Tony hurried to the scene to try to prevent the fight from happening. In the chaos, his friend River was killed. He missed and killed Bernaldo in self-defense. This made Maria fall into conflict and pain. She endured the scolding and insults from her family, but she couldn't let go of Tony. Bernaldo’s friend searched for Tony with a gun. dislike. So many awards that year was because of new ideas. Although it is full of moving songs and dances, as well as racial issues, the skeleton of the story is too large and lacks moving details and the power of insight.
