In 1964, St. Nicholas Catholic School, Bronx, New York, USA Sister Aloysius Bellville (Meryl Streep) is forbidden, dogmatic, and feared by students, while the new priest, Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), is kind, open-minded, and loved by students.

During this time, Flynn is especially concerned about Donald Miller (Joseph Foster), the school's first-ever black student. One day, Sister James (Amy Adams) reports Donald's strange behavior to Sister Bewell. Beville determined that Flynn was developing an inappropriate relationship with the boy, and she was determined to stop it at all costs. But what are the facts?
