Stalker, scientist/professor, writer. Rule-inventor/keeper, rule-follower, rule-breaker. Dreamer, destroyer, thinker. While the dreamer criticizes and laments over the disbelievers, the pessimists give in to the idea of hope embedded in the dreamer's head and life. Maybe they take on a piece of hope too. And the muted girl, Monkey, who moves the cups with her mind, and who only appears after the trio have reconciled amongst themselves. Hearing is a receptive sense, speaking is an expressive one, but seeing is both — the child of the Zone observes and mobilizes. Who is she? A child of decayed civilization? Of destruction? Or of hope?

[China Film Archive Beijing Film Festival Screening] Film version. For some reason, compared to DVD resources, the overall picture of the film is extremely reddish. The consistent long-lens photography style is great. The plot and connotation are not obscure in Laota's works. The world's anxiety and struggle are concentrated in one person. The characteristics of the three protagonists are not likable. The subtitles of the version are not very good. Wet, hazy, those creepy shallow close-ups are perfect
