There are a lot of dog blood movies, and too few pure love movies. There are fewer and fewer films that really only focus on the relationship between the two. "The Phantom Thread" is one of those less and less films. Its exquisite costumes and beautiful framing are not to show how skilled a generation of stitchers is, but to tell a poignant and twisted love story.
Reynolds was a costume designer, and he was hard on everything around him, but it was this critical spirit that brought his clothes to the attention of the upper echelons. He had to be surrounded by beautiful women who were attracted by his talent and appearance, but in the end, the beautiful women couldn't stand his indifference and impermanence, and died without a problem. During a break, Reynolds fell in love at first sight with Alma, the town attendant, and quickly brought her into his world.
We can see from the scene where Reynolds is driving, the change here is obvious. Before he came to the town, we could only see the rear of the car, something as fast and hard as ice, so people couldn't see his expression or guess what he was thinking. And when he and Alma came back, they were from the front of the car. There were no foreign objects at all, and they could only see the intensity and joy of the two.
Enthusiasm came and went quickly for Reynolds, who brought Alma back to the studio and everything was back to normal. Alma quickly integrated into the studio, but became increasingly distant from Reynolds. And in this castle, the most important woman is Reynolds' sister Cyril.
The relationship between these three is very interesting. The two who lost their mothers when they were young have made a deep bond between the siblings. For Reynolds, work may be more important than relationships, so even on dates, he often brings his sister with him. This made Alma very uncomfortable and began to want to compete for the affection.
The scramble became apparent the first time Reynolds took Alma to the studio. Reynolds brought Alma to the studio to measure a new dress for her, and Alma was beaming with happiness. And then Cyril, who broke in, looked and examined Alma, causing Alma to be shocked by this foreign guest.
Alma begins to compete for her relationship with Cyril, wants to be alone with Reynolds, wants to be the only truly irreplaceable one here. Alma felt that Reynolds had been living a falsehood and that she was his truth.
The first time Alma and Reynolds chatted was mother and curse. These two words were deeply embedded in Reynolds' heart. The seamstress could not get married and could only grow old alone. Therefore, he is full of contradictions and yearning for marriage. He wants to find support, but he is afraid of being hurt and rejected.
Reynolds built himself a solid shell, and the studio was his castle. In this castle he is the only master. Every morning, he would meticulously organize and apply, and then enjoy the ritual of working while eating breakfast, and no one can disturb it. Only Alma made him lose his mind with his messy hair all day long.
Alma is the one who sees through this layer of hypocrisy, trying to find Reynolds' weakness. Try to surprise him, try to get him to try new dishes, and find that nothing pleases him. Once, she found that he only became honest when he was extremely tired, so she chose to make him tired and tired again.
The way Alma used it was scary, but understandable. Her character is direct, even a little rude, but in order to have a deeper connection with Reynolds, he adopts extreme methods, making their love a dependence and the only one. So the final clip of the film, Reynolds cutting the dress, like he's proposing, is full of ceremony.
Everyone has their own principles and walls, and whether they can walk in depends on whether another person can find the corresponding key. This key is not a chain, but a cage in which one is willingly trapped. The picture, color, and composition of this film are beautiful as a whole, but the important thing is that we can still feel some real affection in this distortion. This is the cage of love, ordinary and real.
