Destruction and Revenge

The end of the film is unexpected, David is not "wronged", but chooses to die calmly. Journalists are not hired to find out the truth, but are used to obtain interview fees and publicize the case. This also confirms why the reporter in the film is asking David why he didn't find a detective to investigate. In fact, the title of the film does not match the reality of the film. We did not see David's life, but only a middle-aged man who devoted himself to his ideals after he fell down. These few short years may be the most meaningful time in his life. .

The film begins with student Berlin unsuccessfully negotiating bribes with teacher David, and is finally expelled from the school for failing grades. Berlin resented having sex with her teacher at a party and sued David for rape. Everyone knows that David is addicted to alcohol, and his wife has cheated on him first, so he has put on a green hat, so they all think that David's actions are drunk and disorderly. David's inability to argue with himself led to his disgrace, his wife and family separated, and his former friends and students were afraid to avoid it. Bolin would rather sully her own reputation and leave David's reputation in disrepute. Isn't this suicidal revenge after the negotiation failed? And David currently has nothing, and his best friend Constantine is also facing the threat of leukemia and will soon pass away. Constantine and David are both leaders in the abolition movement, but David admits at the beginning of the film that he didn't really want to join the movement. However, when he fell into a low point in his life, David took the abolition movement as his final redemption. Played a murder and rape scene with Constantine, but in fact Constantine committed suicide, dedicated himself to the ideal, and recorded a video of his suicide. In the film, David and the governor went on a TV show to discuss the abolition of the death penalty, but they did not reach a final negotiation due to their excessive words and deeds. After his efforts failed, David also chose the final suicidal revenge to abolish the death penalty system in the state. Behavior is epic.

The whole event is proceeding step by step according to David's plan, and the only people who are kept in the dark are the female reporter and her silly assistant. At the end, the passersby expressed their resentment and support for David's death, and also showed the blind worship and indiscriminateness of authority in our daily masses. In the end, David asked his lawyer and friends to bring his wife and children a box of money (an interview fee) and a card (Berlin's apology letter). It can be seen in the video that the ex-wife and her son have been living with their lover in Spain. And this card once again shows that David did not rape the students, and this box of money represents the last love that David left to his wife and children.

The Life of David Gale quotes

  • Constance Harraway: [giving an anti-death penalty speech] When you kill someone, you rob their family - not just of a loved one, but of their humanity. You harden their hearts with hate, you take away their capacity for civilized dispassion, you condemn them to bloodlust. It's a cruel and horrible thing, but indulging that hate will *never* help. The damage is done, and once we've had our pound of flesh, we're still hungry. We leave the death house muttering that lethal injection was just too good for them. In the end, a civilized society must live with a hard truth: he who seeks revenge digs two graves.

  • Berlin: [referring to her black panties] Rip them.

    David Gale: Huh?

    Berlin: Rip them off.

[Berlin then proceeds to take off David's pants, he then props her up on the bathroom sink and has sex with her]

    Berlin: No, from behind.

[He thrusts into her hard from behind]

    Berlin: Do it hard.
