[Falling in love with a girl]
is somewhat similar to the initial situation of the protagonists of the first two films. The protagonist, Connor, was not a school man who radiated light everywhere at the beginning. He is a transfer student and looks a little weak, so he is often bullied by his classmate Barry at school. However, since he was attracted by Rafina, the girl with exaggerated makeup across from the school, he began to activate the high-energy mode. The first two sentences he picked up on the girl made people couldn't help but give a compliment to the instantly witty Connor:
Connor: Do you want fire?
Rafina: No, I'm quitting smoking.
Connor: I'm not on fire anyway.
Ha ha. Perhaps it was this unusual answer that attracted Rafina, and she began to talk with Connor, who had been refusing to answer.
At first, I was very surprised, what attracted Connor to that precocious and beautiful girl, and I felt that her temperament was completely out of tune. Shouldn't Connor like Little Fresh? But perhaps it was because of Connor's discreet school life that Rafina caught his eye. Rafina was smoking a cigarette, drawing thick eyeliner, and wearing two big earrings standing outside the door with a bold and uninhibited look that Connor did not have. But what is surprising is that Connor, who is weak in appearance, has a perfect score for her flirting skills. He dared to lie about a band that had not yet formed and successfully got the goddess phone, and also successfully invited Rafina to be the model for their music video.
[The Transformation of a Teenager]
Connor did what he said to form a band for the goddess. Unsure of what he could do, he and his buddy Darren started recruiting bandmates. Emon, who loves rabbits, is the first member they find. Amon is very versatile. Not only can he play any instrument, he can also compose music, and he can also provide a rehearsal venue and a full set of instruments. Niggie was the second member of the band just because Darren thought it would be cool to have a black guy in the band. Then came the addition of the drummer and the bass player (I would say a thousand times that the bass player is too small and cute! It's more fun to pretend to be an adult).
Director Carney's film stories always have a magical power that turns corruption into magic. The characters in each of his films initially seem ordinary, even downright downbeat, but each time these people become charismatic in their musical journey. No exceptions this time. Connor's makeshift bandmates are just that. Originally, a group of teenagers who had no sense of existence gathered together because of music, and their attitudes when entering and leaving the school became high-spirited. Especially Connor, who used to live in the school's rigid dogma and became unruly. He put on a trench coat, dyed his hair, and even painted his eyes. He is no longer afraid of Barry who bullied him before, and even challenged Barry openly in front of everyone, saying to him: "You can only destroy, not create."
Having something to do, especially something you like, should be the best medicine for overcoming a boring life. Connor and his buddies named the band "Sing Street", and they sang on the street just like that. While it's funny how they imitate grown-ups, they enjoy the feeling of being in control of their lives.
The growth of youth is always accompanied by some pain, and Connor is not a boy with everything going smoothly. He has encountered all kinds of bad things at school and at home. But he found his purpose in life through a girl. Although the motive for forming the band was impure, under the guidance of his brother Brandon, he discovered his own musical talent, gained strength from it, and found valuable confidence.
[Juvenile Vision]
During the rehearsal of the school dance performance, Connor had such a picture in his mind: he seemed to be in the American campus he longed for, and his performance with the band attracted a lot of people dancing. First his beloved girl Rafina appeared in the audience with adoring eyes, then the hideous Baxter brothers (the school's governing authority), then his parents and brother. Baxter no longer deliberately embarrassed him, but gave him a thumbs up for his performance; his parents stopped resenting and accusing each other and became love each other; his brother was no longer decadent, and he appeared majestically in front of the door on a motorcycle. The music got everyone swinging and they were all cheering for him...
I was especially pleasantly surprised by the way my brother Brandon came back to life in the good vision. The amazing older brother helped a lot in his younger brother Connor's musical path. That's because he, too, once loved music like Connor. Back then, he played the guitar very well, ran the 200 meters faster than anyone else, and many girls circled around him. He too has had the glory and joy that music brings. But the family's misfortune finally made him sink, and he became a decadent youth who dropped out of school and took drugs. Seeing his brother's efforts, he also began to reflect on himself. Although in the real stage performance, the brother did not appear handsome and free and easy, but he has to work hard to do something meaningful. Before his brother Connor left, he wrote a lyric to him.
[Director who always gives people warmth]
Among the supporting roles in this film, the boy who bullied Connor always caught my attention. Darren had told Connor from the beginning that Barry would pick on the weak-looking classmates to bully. In fact, Barry is just a strong child. His parents were addicts, so Barry must have suffered a lot growing up. He bullied the weak at school, in my opinion just because he didn't know how to deal with the hurt from the family. He bullies his classmates who are weaker than himself just to find a sense of existence in nothingness. In fact, he may be more inferior and weaker than anyone else in his heart. So when Connor challenged him openly and touched his sore spot, he started to flinch.
I always feel that the director is a warm person, which can be seen partly through the design and arrangement of his characters. At the end of the story, Connor offered to invite Barry to be their band's bodyguard, which really touched me. Barry was left with almost nothing because he lost the cover of his tough exterior. But being the band's bodyguard not only gave him a place to use his own value, but also gave him the opportunity to meet real friends. This is definitely the best option for him.
Love John Carney's work. One is the good music in the movie, the other is the character setting in the movie, and the little humor that the director exudes from time to time in the details, as well as the unforgettable cute warmth. For example, in a scene on the bus, where the cute bass player invites a gray-haired lady to dance, I absolutely love it. The smiles on the faces of the band members and Rafina were so beautiful, you can't help but wonder how wonderful it would be if all the moments in the world could be so harmonious and beautiful!
Last personal opinion: Although the ending of walking to the end of the world for the dream is very exciting, the shaky boat in the wind and rain always makes me worry about the danger of capsizing. But the fearless young face still has the brightest smile, which always makes me feel a little too romantic and a little less restrained. I think it would be better if my brother Brandon watched them go to sea.
