The story takes place in the southern United States in 1909. Uneducated black girl Sealy is forced to marry a rude, vicious black man whom Sealy calls "Mr." after being raped by her stepfather. Notre Dame movies are the ultimate example, the embarrassment from beginning to end makes me feel uncomfortable...

Lao Si's films have always teetered on the edge of vast epic and overly sensational, and it is rare for a film involving women and race to be so delicately arranged by a male director. A very smart group portrait of black women spanning more than 70 years. When the heroine embraces her long-lost sons and daughters who have returned from Africa, there really is a sense of grandeur and warmth that rises leisurely. Perfection.
