the profound happiness and sadness

If it is a love story, it is too superficial; if it is a feminist film, it is too incomprehensible. So, this should be a feminist movie with love mixed in, right?
Let's talk about the heroine Karen in the film. Not everyone can live her life without the opportunity, ability, enthusiasm, and determination. Or from the point of view of many male viewers, a woman is in a relationship with two (or more?) men, is it suave? But from a woman's point of view, Karen couldn't be more loyal, at least she gave her all in every relationship she was in, without any hesitation. From this point of view, she clearly knew what she wanted. Of course, we also know what she wants. What she wants is not just love or sex, but the relationship between owning and being owned, or a sense of belonging. But it is a pity that she repeatedly tolerated and fulfilled the other party's desire for freedom, but in the end, as denys said: you ruined it yourself(?). I think, she didn't say that she wants to limit someone's freedom, but freedom is indeed an endless thing, the more you have, the more you want it. But looking back, how can you attract karen if you are not this kind of person who pursues freedom?
Let's talk about the way karen and denys get along. It is believed that this is a kind of "peach blossom" or utopian love, and it is also what the public desires. No fuss, no household chores, no quarrels, just a refreshing view, good living conditions, casual sex, and endless conversations. Is that love? Perhaps that is the highest form of love. Maybe the reason why we see this movie as the most successful love movie in history is because it depicts such a perfect love scene? But the desire for freedom knows no bounds, and so does the desire for love. Karen asked for marriage, perhaps to sublimate the relationship between the two sides, but denys said it again: even if I get married, I will not be closer to you, nor will I love you more. But unfortunately, even if they are as brave as they are, they are still mortals, and they cannot escape the destiny designed by God. However, if it ends like this, it means that the beauty has been frozen, and no matter how sad it is in the future, you can still gain the courage to survive. Better than destroying it yourself.
Finally, let's talk about women's rights. Karen has fallen in love with this place from the moment she set foot on the African continent. In addition to the scenery, I believe there is a very important reason: there are no rules and regulations, and she can do whatever she wants. In order to meet her husband, she traveled to transport combat supplies in person, managed and operated a coffee farm in person, lived with denys without hesitation, applied for a place of residence for the locals regardless of face, and presided over the funeral for denys after her death... The performance of feminism, it is better to say that she is loyal to herself. What's more admirable is that she did not escape, and has always taken responsibility bravely. This should be what we lack, right? Her courage was finally acknowledged when she was invited by the club members to drink at a bar where women were not allowed, although she presumably didn't care. Such a life is wonderful, not only because of her daring personality, but also because of her courage to take it upon herself.
It seems that love never stops, but the more you want to hold on to it, the faster it escapes, but when you are really powerless to keep it, it won't go around.

There are many possessions that cannot be seen or touched, left or taken away, and eventually become part of our spirit. We are bent on changing the world, and in the end we can only change ourselves. Compared with the vast land of Africa, we are too small, but such a small us, working hard to live, love hard, and pursue happiness and freedom, is it not a wonderful thing.

Men always feel that the essence of love has nothing to do with other substances and relationships; women always hope that love can develop into a relationship. The unique emotional color of the old film is very strong, but unfortunately the ending is a bit deliberate. In addition, the director made Africa so beautiful.

Out of Africa quotes

  • Karen Blixen: If you say anything now... I'll believe it.

[to Denys, immediately after they kiss in her tent]

  • Denys: [to Karen, whose horse has run away, leaving her at the mercy of an approaching lion] I wouldn't run. If you do, she'll think you're something good to eat.

Karen Blixen: [staring at lion] Have you - Do you have a gun?

Denys: She won't like the smell of you.

Karen Blixen: Shoot - shoot it.

    Denys: She's had breakfast.

    Karen Blixen: Please shoot her.

Denys: Well, let's give her a moment.

Karen Blixen: [as lion comes closer] Oh my God, shoot her!

[Lion approaches Karen then wanders off into brush]

Karen Blixen: Just how much closer did you expect to let her come?

Denys: A bit. It wanted to see if you'd run. That's how they decide. A lot like people that way.

Karen Blixen: She almost had me for lunch!

Denys: Well, it wasn't her fault, Baroness. She's a lion.

Karen Blixen: Well, it wasn't mine.

Denys: Doesn't that outfit come with a rifle?

    Karen Blixen: Ye-ah, uh.

    [looks around]

    Karen Blixen: On my saddle.

Denys: Better keep it with you. Your horse isn't much of a shot.
