Joan of Arc

I was able to see Joan of Arc for the first time today. This should be said to be a film that was 11 years late. As early as the Changping period, the history department had seen it, and especially recommended weapons that appeared in the imperial era such as balers. The film interprets Joan of Arc in two sentences: you saw what you wanted to see and you fight for yourself in your name. That is to say, in the movie, Joan of Arc is not inspired by God. However, she was not killed with a single stick. Still let there be soul communication between Joan of Arc and God. After all, it is too much to say that it hurts the feelings of the French people. The scene of the film is moving and contagious, especially the screen and plot switching have never appeared subtitles (is Zhang Yimou should learn from others). When Joan of Arc was screaming and shaking her tongue, it was hard to imagine anyone who wouldn't be driven. It’s enough for historical films to shoot at this level, much better than the Kingdom of Heaven (I didn’t have the patience to watch the Kingdom of Heaven). The actors are good, but the supporting roles are pretty bad.

Besson's version of Joan of Arc, although there are some historical errors, is still an epic film worth watching. The first half is a little messy, and the second half is getting better. The psychological description of Joan is very brilliant. Dustin Hoffman's conscience exposes many believers' blind spots and hidden sinfulness that are unavoidable. The scenes of the war are remarkable, but the trial part has a sense of circumspect, not as good as the Bresson and Dreyer versions. (8.3/10)

ashes to ashes, and dust to dust;in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection unto eternal life……

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc quotes

  • Joan of Arc: I did not come here to perform tricks. You're all much cleverer than I am. Me, I don't know A from B. But this much I do know. That while the people of France lie bleeding, you sit around in your fine clothes trying to deceive me, when you're only deceiving yourselves. You say you are men of God. Yet, you do not see His hand in having guided me through 500 leagues of enemy country to bring you His help. Is that not proof enough? Do you still need more signs?

  • La Hire: [praying] I swear that I will never swear again in my life, if you save her life. But I'm warning you, if you let her die, then you're the biggest...

Joan of Arc: Laxart! Don't swear.

    La Hire: He heard me.
