death is the last peace of mind

Understand part of what the film wants to convey, grow out of nature, and eventually return to nature. Because of the shortness and impermanence of life, we must learn to be strong, tolerant, wise, and gentle in order to fight against life.

One life is for the experience and for the reproduction of offspring, like a contract. To be allowed to come, but also to ensure that the latecomers also have the opportunity to come, but did not have the right to choose at the beginning. Once there, there is a sense of touch or emotion, and there is a responsibility to bear—the responsibility to maintain one's own life and the life of future generations. Even though there is a lot of pain in the process, it has to be endured or enjoyed. Octopuses give birth to offspring in the process of death, and there is no need to doubt the rationality of this responsibility.

But people will doubt. "You are part of this planet, not a visitor." It is not a passerby but a part. Since you have participated in this game, you must be willing to accept defeat, accept the principle of cause and effect, and do your best to know the destiny. People are also the product of genes and natural laws. They have doubts but have no ability to challenge them, because death will not be the end of everything, but only the last peace of mind.

Death is the last peace of mind / Like the setting sun / We see it sinking on the horizon / But we know it shines on the other side - Goethe

My Octopus Teacher quotes

  • Craig Foster: What she taught me was to feel... that you're part of this place, not a visitor. That's a huge difference.

  • [first lines]

Craig Foster: A lot of people say an octopus is like an alien. But the strange thing is, as you get closer to them, you realize that we're very similar in a lot of ways.
